We like to eat out but we never go for Sunday roasts, as its always nicer at home. I rarely find that you can get a decent crispy roast potatoes, just some soggy skinned anemic spud. Saying that the Green Man north of Partridge Green is nice.
Not a fan of pub Sunday roasts out either. Why are they generally incapable of serving gravy separately instead of drowning the entire meal with it. Also seem to have got very expensive recently for what they are.

Will only go now if the pub has other things on the menu as well as roasts.

I cook a lot using Gusto pretty interesting fare if you can read a recipe and deliver on it, makes me look at many of the lower cost places and think I could have done that or better.. Regards high end food , never been in a 'top' restaurant but if master chef is anything to go on not sure i want to IF i was to eat and be satisfied (portions).

I get your point but I think this can also vary based on life stage - ie I have 2 small children atm so dinner time is mostly a fairly stressful experience, and often not the culinary delight I would prefer.

Therefore, when my wife and I are able to get a babysitter and go out for a meal just the 2 of us, it is INCREDIBLE.

I'd argue probably in the Top 2 things I can do with my wife when kids not around.
Yeah, we like diving into a good boxset too.

Done a Frexit, now in London
We used to eat out loads, then once the pet sperm came along we've not gone out together once. Now it's a takeaway at home and only use things that can go in the dishwasher after. A good film or series on the TV. Job done!
Only dinners out have been while on family holidays.

Do enjoy eating out Mostly a early evening summer thing at different country pubs. However cut right down this year due to price increases. Not long ago when weather was good would be 3 times a week but now just for mains each and one drink its £50 plus.
As far as better establishments are concerned went to Ginger Fox recently Food ok plus one drink each but though bill £110 was a joke. Only had a sweet each because both were still hungry. Long gone are the days when never had a sweet because I was full up.
Sometime ago went with family to a fairly well known restaurant in Brighton . 3 of us ordered duck breast and not exagerating when I say one duck breast was sliced up between three of us. Unable to say anything because bill was been paid by a relative.

I tend to find the bills a tad crunchy.

The Ginger Fox was always far from cheap, I wonder how we afforded Sunday lunchtimes for 4, ten years ago?

The Royal Oak at Poynings is still decent value imho, albeit all eateries have faced huge cost increases.

When I first moved up to Cumbria, we ate out most weeks down the pub. Pie and chips mainly - proper sort of pub grub.

Now I've moved more towards to touristy part of Cumbria we have to pay the Lake District premium, and the pubs have become all fancy - and the menu's likewise.

Cost has gone up, quantities have gone down and value plummeted. And my cooking has improved.

We generally only now go out for odd social occasions.

I eat out a lot, also. Went to Fumi and Blossoms recently both decent, Blossoms the better out of the two. Do like a Michelin restaurant from time to time, but like to feel relaxed and I don't often find them as relaxing because it's an experience rather than just a nice meal. The selection in Brighton and Hove is superb.

What a lovely story. Are you still together?
She left me after she said she wanted asparagus and I replied “I don’t think this restaurant has sparrow on the menu…. and my name isn’t Gus”.
