[TV] Blackadder Goes Forth

35 years since the final episode was broadcast and it's still a stunning piece of television.

We watched the whole series in the late 90s in Y9 History class - for most, if not all, of us our first exposure to Blackadder. I think we all assumed they'd get out of it somehow, and I still remember the stunned silence when they didn't.

Incredible work from all involved.

A very similar experience to you in how I came into it, and it’s still one of the absolute best series ever created for me.

It’s a shame the first season of Blackadder was so poor, because S2-3 were also brilliantly funny.

I've grown to like the first series - don't get me wrong, it's not a patch on the other three but it does have it's merits - specially when compared to modern day 'comedies' ( I won't name Miranda and Mrs Brown - opps ! ).

I remember the first episode getting panned with people saying it was a disgrace showing soldiers trying to get out of fighting and that they were heroes and should be shown as such.

Sheer brilliance . One of my many favourite lines is from George in the final episode - wrote one word in my diary today .........bugger!

Some of it was filmed in your neck of the woods.
Alnwick Castle for instance.

In a minority here, I thought the first series was one of the funniest of any comedy on TV. Series 2/3 were a disappointment to me.
Series 4 did see a comeback for me personally and of course the last episode was hilarious and moving in equal measure.

Cost cutting at the bbc saved black adder. After the 1st series, the bbc declined to commission a second as the sets and outdoor shoots were too expensive.

In the end a scaled down series with less sets and more basic was commissioned and focus was entirely on jokes per scene rather than looking flash

Agreed. There are some really clever bits and the writing is sublime

I totally respect your right to disagree

I’ve just never been a big fan of Mr Bean type comedy, so the first season has never done it for me. Not that I have much or any time for Miranda or Mrs Browns boys either.

In fact, I can’t remember the last time I watched a good modern comedy.

I enjoyed all the series’.

Find memories of growing up watching it. Looking forward to each new episode as it aired.

There’s nothing like it anymore. Upstart Crow has some good moments.
