Google Maps reminded me I still have this on my watchlist on Netflix about some East Germans who came up with something that looks remarkably similar to Google Earth

From the Guardian's article on the story:

"The paper tested the “infinite monkey theorem”, a thought experiment demonstrating that an infinite amount of time can make something that is incredibly unlikely become probable, by asking what would happen if generous yet finite limits were placed on the monkey typists."

That's a fail then. The adage has little to do with monkeys typing and just describes an extremely unlikely event to explain the concept of infinity. They have completely missed the point and tested something entirely different. Although I would never argue that theoretical research is useless, this doesn't answer the question posed. They've moved the goalposts.

The abstract: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2773186324001014 shows that they've also set a finite limit for the number of monkeys that's not in the original statement. They cheat at mathematics as well as cricket.

Even within their own limits, surely it would still be theoretically “possible” for the chimps to get it right first time, and accomplish the feat?

So, taking this as an example, Howard Florey was co-awarded the Nobel prize for discovering penicillin as he led the team that developed its medical use.

Howard Florey was unquestionably from Australia, but he was working at the University of Oxford while leading a team of people from all sorts of places (the third co-recipient was Ernst Chain, born in Germany and a British citizen from 1939). So it's not true to say that penicillin was "invented in Australia".

A lot of this is genuinely interesting, joking aside. The flight recorder is another "well, kind of..." one. The bloke who invented the modern version was Australian, but there were predecessors in other places and it was developed in Britain, for example.

Yes, I have had a long train journey to read about this stuff on this morning.

I googled 'where was the sheep shearing machine invented' and......oh dear, are Australians making false claims again?

'The sheep shearing machine was invented in Australia by Frederick York Wolseley, an Australian sheepgrower:
(all good so far)

Wolseley's machines were manufactured in Birmingham, Englandby his company, The Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company. The machines were introduced after 1888 and revolutionized the sheep shearing industry. By 1915, most large sheep stations in Australia had installed machines.
(getting a bit woolly)

Wolseley was born in Dublin and moved to Australia in 1854.
(Bugger, he was Irish)
