I was really impressed with him against the Antlers.

Just a friendly but the right-wing/right-back role really suited him. His positioning and passing were great and he looked fast and fit. He is also clearly a very nice guy and integrates well in the squad. But I notice his mentor has taken on another apprentice. There were two happy meals purchased after the 5-1 win and neither were for Tariq!

There are two Damocles Swords hanging over his continuing participation in our project. He has enterered the last year of his contract. It’s very unusual for us to use players in the first team as they play out their contract, especially one so young. Could this season be an exception?

Secondly, he is only ever a game or two away from yet another frustrating injury. 100% not his fault, he is just made that way.

Given his undoubted quality though, I suspect he’ll remain a squad player this year. Yes, they’ll be another right wing back signed for him to compete with for a place but I think he’ll be a great pick in the dozen or so games he’ll manage to be fit for us this season.

Him leaving on a free next summer is fine also. I suspect the constant injuries have have all but destroyed his transfer value. I hope he can find an understanding club happy with a dozen games a year when the time comes.

I think he could be a late in the window decision. We’re clearly in the market for a new RB/RWB but we’re chasing some big fish and I suspect if we land one he’ll move and if we don’t, he’ll stay.

decent going forward, got a lucky goal but they all count, totally abysmal defensively. i only say this because i’ve seen some really rave about his performance, even say he was MOTM, well i was there tonight and i didn’t see it. just gets knocked off the ball far too easily. same thing happened when AEK scored their winner against us last season. also got incredibly lucky when steele bailed him out after he was dwelling on the ball for far too long. and why he have gakpo the freedom of the penalty area for their first, i’ll never know

He cost us the game tonight. Should have put us 1-0 up then messed up twice. If Veltman is RB then no way do goals 1 & 2 happen.
Having said that he put in a shift, looked decent going forward and caused them some problems, I was pleased for him that he scored, but he isn’t good enough at defending, which is unfortunate for a defender.

The story of the last few years.

Over 90 minutes he can’t defend for toffee. Don’t be wooed by doing pretty well against Gakpo for 45, that means little.

But attacking, he’s suddenly become amazing.
This. He needs to be moved forward, except he’s not as good a right winger as Minteh, Gruder, March, Rutter, Sunak or Adingra.

Do goals such as that get later classifiesd as OG’s? The PL are religious about it, a panel sits.

The only role, I’ve said this for two or three years, would be RWB with an outstanding right sided CB in a three behind him.

TL has to be one of the most likeable players we’ve had in our PL era. I desperately want him to do well but he can embody our overall inconsistency (as can others). Too good to let go and equally not (currently) first eleven for PL games. Don’t think it’s beyond him reclaiming though, he might surprise us yet.

Agree with the majority of comments about Tariq on this thread. He is great at attacking, and showed positive signs, however his defensive display today was poor. I love Tariq and I think he is an excellent player. However, the club has reached greater heights now and I don’t think he meets the level that is required. I hope I’m proved wrong.

Play him as an impact sub winger, on the other side to Mitoma. Bosh.

Then he's an irreplaceable escape goat!

One could argue he was at least partially to blame for the first two goals conceded - the first he was caught out of position, the second he failed to win the ball.

Offense was very good, defense poor.

To be fair if Veltman was right back then the third goal would not have happened either because someone else might have cleared it properly!

Yeah can't remember the last time Veltman was easily knocked off the ball by an attacker and the only response was to appeal for a non existent foul. Other than obviously three times on Saturday
