My older brother was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. I’m in my mid 60s. Apparently these 2 things mean I have a greater likelihood of getting it too. I have a PSA test next week. Thanks for the useful info here, and the various links posted.
All the best PP

I had my fifteenth radiotherapy today, just five left next week.

I'm annoyed with my GP who last summer 2023 told me "you're 66 years old you're bound to have an enlarged prostate "
That delayed me three months..... different doctor, and I was found to have stage 2 prostate cancer.

Great news. I've just been for my face to face meeting after my biopsy and other tests. All of this after a PSA reading of 24 on my blood test.
Whilst I do have prostate cancer it has not spread and it can be cured.
The doctor asked why I had the blood test and I said it was by suggestion of my doctor. He said I caught the cancer in time and another few months I may not have been so lucky. Fact.
So, put at the top of your list of to do things, have a test next week. Not next month or after Christmas, but next week.
Save a life, your own.

After a few mini changes in the past year or so, this thread and the high profile cases, I decided it was time to have a PSA test. Did the eConsult yesterday morning, appt today and after checking in on the screen was seen 10 mins early.
I'm confident all will be fine and will hear on Friday, but just another nudge to those with ANY concerns just how simple and reassuring it is to get a test done.
Just need to hope the blood removed doesn't affect me for a couple of pre-match liveners this evening.

I went to see a Urology specialist today after I displayed some worrying symptoms. I was given the obligatory, exploratory finger, took a flow test and then underwent a scan with some invasive object. Not pleasant, but I've been given the all clear for at least a year. I'm just wondering why i wan't given a PSA test. Any thoughts?

Does seem a little OTT for a first test, but the worrying symptoms probably set off alarm bells with them. How was the flow test? I had to drink litres of water and have a pee. Taking a pee in a bucket on demand isn't the easiest thing in life.
To others, don't think all the above is normal. A simple blood test gets it all started if you've no symptoms. But no symptoms doesn't mean no cancer.

Did you ask for one?

On a similar theme, I recently had an invitation for Bowel Cancer screening. Where previously this was only for Over 60's they have started offering it to those aged 54, 56 and 58.

Fairly simple (albeit not nice) to get some poo on a stick i.e. they provide a grooved stick, you don't just grab one from a tree and post it off to them and send it back to them :) , results come back in a couple of weeks.

Pleased to say my test was clear but if anyone receives this offer, please do it - I have had a friend younger than me who has already had treatment for this.

I was told to drink lots of water before leaving home and by the time I arrived at the clinic I was busting, so peeing in a bucket was not a problem!
