Albion v Liverpool

EFL CUP (Carabao Cup) - FOURTH ROUND

Venue:
The American Express Stadium
Date: Wednesday 30th October 2024
Kick-off: 19:30 GMT
Referee: Darren Bond
Assistants: Darren Cann, Matthew Wilkes
Fourth Official: Simon Hooper

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has been speaking to the media before Wednesday's Carabao Cup game against Liverpool.
Here are the key lines from his news conference:
  • Lewis Dunk "has a small muscle injury" and although Hurzeler does not know the time scale for his return "it is possible" it could be before the international break.
  • He said "it won't be easy to replace" Dunk as he's "our captain and leader" but Igor Julio shows they have suitable replacements in defence.
  • Jack Hinshelwood and Yankuba Minteh have been in training and "both have a chance" of featuring against Liverpool.
  • Jason Steele will be in goal for the cup game and Tariq Lamptey could be given some minutes as he has been "looking sharp and strong in training".
  • He said Danny Welbeck, who had a back injury, came through Saturday's game fine and "is an option" against Liverpool.
  • On the disappointing draw against Wolves: "It's important you don't let yourself be defined by failure, failure should teach you. We were really honest with each other. But in general it was about learning from these things and trying to be better next time."
  • On opponents Liverpool: "They are one of the best teams in the world but it is a game. We are capable of beating every team in this league. If you don’t have self-belief you shouldn’t be in games like this."
  • He said he wants his team "to be ruthless" in and out of possession "because there will always be chances" in the game to cause damage.

MATCH FACTS
  • Brighton have won two of their last three home games against Liverpool in all competitions (D1), as many as their first 17 against the Reds beforehand (W2 D6 L9).
  • This will be the third League Cup meeting between Brighton and Liverpool, with the Reds winning both of the previous two in the 1985-86 third round (4-0) and 2011-12 third round (2-1).
  • Brighton have won each of their last three home games in the League Cup, never before winning four in a row in the competition. The Seagulls are looking to reach the quarter-final for the second time, after 1978-79; they have been knocked out at the fourth round in their last five attempts since.
  • Liverpool are looking to avoid becoming the fourth consecutive holders of the League Cup to go out at the fourth round stage, after Man City in 2021-22, the Reds themselves in 2022-23, and Man Utd in 2023-24.
  • Since the start of last season, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo has scored more League Cup goals than any other player (6), with the Dutchman averaging a goal every 91 minutes in the competition.

It's remarkable really that every single match for years you manage to post the match day thread, even if perhaps things in real life could get in the way.

Fantastic commitment, a few hours late who cares.
That's very kind, thank you.

Is there any way of putting the first few very silly repetitive posts on every match-day thread on ignore and then picking it up again when they stop? :lolol:

You cannot or should not change the format of such an iconic thread.
It's match day, people have left for the travel north, they are excited and it has got nil all written all over it...you can't mess with that:clap2:

Very mature statement.

Expect us to upset the Anfield faithful. Can’t get to this afternoon’s game, but I’m going for a 3-0 win.

Rutter with two and Georginio with the other two in front of the Holte End. Verbruggen to make some outstanding stops and Dunk imperious at the back.

Easiest three points we’ll ever get.

I'd take a point today against them then go hell for leather in the cup game at The Amex on Saturday.
