[Albion] Will we ever be in the top three?

I find these discussions fascinating. I was first taken to watch Brighton by my dad in the 82/83 season. I saw us beaten again and again. In fact, my dad said I was a f*****g jinx and stopped taking me after a while. Too late though, we were of course relegated that season which began our long slide into almost oblivion. Therefore, I am just delighted that we are back and competing. :giggle:

The other thing I learnt from that first season was that with Brighton, you could always dream. Imagine coming so close to winning the FA Cup!

Anyway, still feels surreal to be unhappy about not being third in the PL and having a realistic chance of European football. Again. Happy times.

We'd have only been 3rd for 1 day though, and only if we hadn't conceded the 1st goal because despite being identical everywhere else, Aston Villa were above us on alphabetical order. So if you're angry with Weiffer for us not being 3rd, you should also be just as annoyed with conceding straight after scoring.

That 1st goal took us from 3rd to 4th on GD, the second took us from 4th to 5th on account of dropping two points.

But, but, but... as someone else pointed out, we would probably have scored to make it 3-1, which would've taken us to 3rd!

If you could give me a choice of winning the League/FA Cup this season and finishing 10th OR winning nothing and finishing 6th. I think I'd rather a cup. Obviously the long term aim is to be European regulars but winning a trophy would be the pinnacle for me!

But, but, but... it depends on which player the pass went to. Would they have scored? Enciso can't hit a barn door, Gruda hasn't scored yet and Fergie has 1 goal in a whole year

It seems to be the way these clubs are going sticking with the manager that got them up.
Yeah i think you are right if they make a decent fist of it, and in the long term will be better for them.
However throwing away their two nil lead against Leicester would have sent some alarm bells ringing.
A spirited performance against City might have kept the wolves at bay for now.

It wasn’t less than 30 years ago, we have to remember people who are now 30 won’t relate to the old days. They have watched the Albion on the main progress to where we are now.
Really 1997 to 2024 is more than 30 years? You sure? Also we were still playing in league one on a frigging athletic track in 2011, can you work out how recent that was or would you like me to do the maths for you.

There are certainly four or 5 teams better than us…..

arse
city
liverpool
chelsea
aston villa

so that leaves us in premier division 2

spurs
brentford
newcastle
manu
brighton
fulham
bournemouth

then the rest.

our season will be defined on results against div 2 teams I think and that is how we try and get into the other European place.

You see, I see the first three as genuine title contenders. The two after that, I see as in form, but don’t necessarily believe it’s sustainable for either.

Villa’s form is reliant on Emery, Chelsea operate a player marketplace that has a football team attached. They judge success and failure by the balance sheet, rather than what happens on the pitch.

If we dropped down to 15th, we’d say we’d regressed. If Chelsea drop to 15th, but it’s because they’ve sold three of their best players and they’d been hugely profitable, that would be a success for Clearlake Capital. Not every team in this league is judging success by the same metrics.
