The simple answer is no. We are so close to being regular European qualifiers but with such a young side we lack experience, top sides don't throw away leads.

There are certainly four or 5 teams better than us…..

arse
city
liverpool
chelsea
aston villa

so that leaves us in premier division 2

spurs
brentford
newcastle
manu
brighton
fulham
bournemouth

then the rest.

our season will be defined on results against div 2 teams I think and that is how we try and get into the other European place.

I think it will be defined by results against premier div 3 teams and our failure to beat them.

You're asking the question of the wrong people. I'm guessing that that vast majority of the more ahem, mature posters never thought we'd get to here

If a certain individual thinks we will, then we will

Thanks to that abysmal pass, we missed the chance to go 3rd in the table, which would have been our highest-ever league position, if you exclude very early-season placings.

I think that's why I'm so annoyed about it - it would have been a small historical achievement for our club. A chance denied by a £25m Dutchman whose legs seem to be tied together with masking tape. With our upcoming two fixtures, it will become out of our reach, and probably will be for the remainder of the season. Will we ever reach such heights?

Do you realise how entitled you sound ? Anyone would have taken W4 D4 L1 at the start!

Not entitled at all. Just grates like hell that we had a chance to be Top Three and blew it.

From the depths of the bottom of the football league to top 3 in the Premier League would have marked an incredible achievement.

Are you saying you wouldn't be proud to see us up there or, if it ever happened, top the league?

The next two games could be a little trying on here. Sales of pampers and pitch forks are going to go through the roof.

We are doing alright.
I'll give the immolation threads a miss if we capitulate.

Didn't we have a chance to top the Prem a couple of seasons ago but failed to beat Palace at Selhurst ? I've never gotten over it.

Not sure what the significance of 3rd place is over say 4th or 6th but -

Simply that it will have been the highest we have ever been. In our history.

Do we deserve that? We’re getting very entitled. New very young manager, new squad essentially, Pedro, O’Riley and yesterday Dunk out.

There’s moments like this every season for every club. Tottenham had one against US. Villa had one yesterday along with other clubs. Manchester United had one tonight. It was a bad loss of points, but we’ve won just last week with a smash and grab against Newcastle.

I said at the start of the season I hoped for top 10 and a cup run, absolutely nothing has changed.

The top clubs have better players, more money, more supporters and for us to even be in the conversation shows we are overachieving.

I’d suggest if you expect to be in the top four you’re probably watching the wrong club.

We’ve never ever won anything of note. Ever. Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle, Everton, Nottingham Forest and the rest - all have cup and league wins, dozens of ‘em.

Reading this place today god knows what it’s going to be like when we slip down to mid table after facing Liverpool then Manchester City and losing in the cup.

Dear me.

No, we probably don't.

Nowt to do with being 'entitled'. It would just have been nice to have been there for a little while. Little old Brighton in the Champions League places. Incredible.

Where on earth did I say that? I don't expect that at all.

We topped the table this season and last season, granted after just one or two games. We were 4th when Potter upped and left for Chelsea. How does going third after 9 league games mean that much more than being 4th after 6? The only time any club is in the Champions League places is when all 38 games have been played.

I’m surprised you didn’t add we used to play at Gillingham and then at an Athletics track.
The leagues biggest spenders in the summer with an already expensive squad have got us around the European places how else do you think we are up there? It’s definitely not being little old Brighton fresh out of Withdean.

True

And at the end of the season based on what seen so far . Top 10 would be an achievement
Would top 10 be an achievement after spending £ 183 000 000 close season, the most in the premier league ?
