Exactly this. Don’t watch it is you want a serious whodunnit type thing.
but it’s fun, and David Mitchell is exactly right in it.
Yeah, we watched it all on iPlayer and really enjoyed it. Ok, yes, it's far-fetched and implausible - but so what? As others have said it's well-made, well-written and well-acted and a nice bit of escapism. Looking forward to the 2nd season.
Those of you harrumphing about the fact it's unrealistic ought to watch 'Grace' - that is way more unrealistic than Ludwig, especially as it's supposed to be more 'real'. We finally got round to watching episode 1 of the fourth season and it was dire. Not the acting, which was fine, but the way the plot moved along, which was always by a baddie volunteering information. They'd start off all: "You'll get nuffink out of me copper!", then Grace says "Oh go on tell us who did it", and the villain says "Oh ok then, it was Fred Bloggs." Without the generous and obliging nature of the members of the Brighton underworld Grace's team wouldn't get anywhere.

Absolutely spot on re: Grace. I was so excited for the series as an enjoyer of the books, but it’s just so naff. I thought the first few episodes were okay, I thought it was just finding its feet and would come good. Nope, just worse and worse. Given up on it entirely now. It’s just a shit A Touch of Frost, with Brighton visual porn.

Yup, went through the entire series in 3 consecutive evenings. Found it really enjoyable. I thought we’d finished with British series only being 6 episodes long though, am hoping a second series might be allowed a bit more space to breathe.

I don't have a problem with David Mitchell, or the premise of the show. Its not bad, its not amazing either. It a pretty gentle watch, if your looking for something light to watch. And I think David Mitchell is good in it.
My criticism is that its very samey. Its basically the same episode told over and over again. I was bored by the 2nd episode. But in fairness I watched it all, so it must have enough about it.

That's a tricky one. Off the top of my head Jack in the Box or Coonskin Cap. And I'm sure there was a good Christmas one with Rik Mayall in.. But almost all the first three proper series are excellent

Black Canary, Jack in the Box, The Grinning Man… but generally just all the Maddie episodes. I’ve seen them all so many times I’m practically word for word at this point

Ludwig was odd in that the cases were obvious and poorly written - not in same league as creek or paradise etc but the underlying puzzle as to where the brother went is what kept me watching.
Ultimately set up for a second series which I will look forward to.

We actually like it. David Mitchell is great, but how thick are the other police colleagues? Suddenly a detective turns up for work acting totally different than he did the days and months before, and no one suspects anything at all? Even though the new version works out whodunnit’s by using totally different methods that before? Yep!
I also think the show would not be any better/ worse if they wrote out Anna Maxwell Martin’s character who I find she plays the same part on every show she is in and IMHO is intensely annoying.

In all these light entertainment/police proceduralls the 2 things that really annoy/amuse me are when the lead detective and his sergeant go to a crime scene, they never wear the all in one forensic white suit, even though all the csi people are wearing them.
And, when they show the big crime board without exception, every suspect/ person of interest has a full face photo and they are all the same.

I enjoyed watching Ludwig. It is a bit like the American show Monk.

Watched another couple of episodes last night - enjoyable if light and fluffy stuff. Agree re: AMM being irritating and seems to play herself in everything (see Colin Farrell). There's a few things which could be easily solved: he doesn't take sugar in his tea, but his brother does. Just say I'm giving it up for health reasons, so no more sugar in my tea please. And last night he was moaning about wearing contacts at the station, when he got back home to take them out and pop on his glasses - he could easily say that he has run out of them, or sore eyes, or something, hence the glasses if he walked into the station wearing them. People he works with would be interested for a second before getting on with their lives!

Whilst you’re obviously entirely right, it could - generously - be explained by his lack of social skills and anxiety. I don’t think it’s controversial to say as per my review in the OP that the character is strongly hinted as being neurodivergent; perhaps he simply doesn’t have that facility. He’s shown throughout to be a terrible liar. Always annoys me in anything when characters are lying come to think of it, acting all suspicious and very clearly lying. In real life any socially aware person would pick it up instantly.
If you want to talk plot holes, the massive one obviously is that James, his brother, apparently never told any of his colleagues that he had an identical twin. If they had known that, he wouldn’t have got past the first five minutes when he was acting completely out of character.
