[Albion] Yet another Amex food complaint

Most of the specialist burger places are great but very different fayre. Can’t really compare them, I reckon.
I love an £18 burger with smoked Tennessee whiskey ketchup, 30 day aged beef, extra mature thick sliced oak cask cheddar , caramelised onion slices, fennel relish, served in a sweet brioche bun with a side order of bbq seasoned double cooked, skin on fries and a half sized can of grapefruit flavoured IPA as much as the next man.
But when I want a £5 burger with plastic cheese, basic fries and a can of Coke on the way home? It’s Uncle Sam’s any day of the week

I use US as a quick lunchtime place as there isn't much choice in Burgess Hill (the KFC is really hit and miss).
I have tried Smoque a couple of times and they are okay but I've not been over impressed and they are expensive compared to US and not a patch on somewhere like Burger Brothers in Brighton. They do very good onion rings though.

Regards Uncle Sam's. Is this the same USams that was at the top of West Street by the clock tower that originated in the early 70s when I spilled out of Sherry's or Jenkinsons cabaret bar at the Kingswest (Good gig)?
Simple, old school perfection.

There was a branch of Uncle Sams at the Clock Tower. It survived at least into the early 90s. I know this for sure because it used to form part of me and the kids Saturday morning Golden Triangle which consisted of trips to Gamleys, Beatties and - meals always eaten at a table up the spiral staircase - Uncle Sams

Back in, ooooh I would say ’85 ish, a bunch of youthful lads decided to embark on the Uncle Sam’s Family 4 challenge in that very place. Rules were simple. First to finish the F4 won. No prizes ; only kudos. 4 x plain burger, 4 x fries, 4 x coke. 6 of us in the queue at the till. After the first 3 had placed their order, the cashier finally twigged. “Let me guess?” he asked the 4th of us. “Yep!” came the reply. 24 burgers, fries, and cokes later we took the fare upstairs and the challenge began. We held 3 more anniversary events before we all departed on our different paths in life. I never won The F4 Challenge.

Another famous eatery that I remember as a youngster, that was great, and precedid SUBWAY by say 3 decades. Was just off East Street by the town hall. I think it was called Captain submarine, and was very popular. Anyone remember.

A regular haunt of mine when I worked in the Lanes - ahh, that famous spiral staircase. My company used to give everyone about £20 a month in Luncheon Vouchers (remember those ?), and as they were accepted at Uncle Sams, that was my go-to when I had a hankering for some beefy-cheese goodness.There was a branch of Uncle Sams at the Clock Tower. That staircase was a bit of a nightmare if you were SPANNERED, mind.
Yes, definitely called Captain Submarine or Capt Subs for short, went there many times in my teens and the food made a change to buying a burger or kebabs
I remember it exactly as you describe. Late 70’s. Contained shredded lettuce and onion, plus dressing and of course the meat or cheese of your choice. They used to cut them in half for you and serve in a long baguette style bag iirc
