The MLS use a best of three system for the first round of the playoffs rather than the more common aggregate score across two games. Games that end in a draw go straight to a penalty shootout to determine the winners. If one team wins the first two games the third game isn’t played.
The rest of the playoffs are played as single knockout games with extra time and penalties if required.
