Duke steps in for King as new patron of city museums

His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester to take over from the King as patron of the Royal Pavilion.

1 What does royal patronage bring ?
2 How far does it extend - in my ignorance, I had no idea who is the Duke of Gloucester and if you had asked me who Prince Richard is I would have guessed a rapper or maybe a wrestler before the kings cousin.
3 There has been no patron since 2022 for the Brighton Pavilion and local museums. What can we look forward to now? What difference will it make?

I have never even heard of Prince Richard. Where did he come from?

King George VI had 4 brothers and a sister.
Duke of Windsor - eldest, abdicated the crown, lived in Paris
Duke of Kent, died in a plane crash in 1942, his eldest son, Prince Edward is the present Duke (90 tomorrow) the late Queen cousin
Duke of Gloucester died 1974. His eldest son William died aged 31 in a plane crash in 1972, so the younger son Prince Richard (80) became the Duke, also the late Queen’s cousin.
Prince John a very sickly child with epilepsy, died aged 13.

He’s not a paid member of the family but helps in the charity work.

in certain circles it counts for something, will get people to turn out to events and fundraisers and part with money. being seen with the people, or associated with them is enough to open cheque books.

though can't see such a fringe royal doing much, a well known non-royal celeb probably do better. probably in case of the Pavilion needs to be someone Royal to keep the Royal Pavilion name.

The Royal Pavilion belongs to Brighton so doesn’t need royal patronage. It was royal because it was built for the Prince Regent, later George IV.
Queen Victoria hated it, sold it to Brighton & bought Osborne House in the IOW.

The patronage is for the museums rather than just the Pavilion.

and if we can just get a handful of tourists to read this, NSC could shift the UK balance of payments and end all his majesty's government debt.

Seems like pretty poor planning to me. He could have had his brother locked in a tower and assissinated. Plenty of historical precedent.

Despite being a republican I am a something of a numismatist, so not entirely uninterested in royal history.

Since decimalisation it’s been boring.

Yes for sentimental reasons.

I was given one as a small child and tucked it under the stair carpet for safe keeping. I think I would have been two and it is one of my earliest memories. As a teenager I used to swap out the silver florins and shillings for their modern decimal equivalents, when I worked in shops.
