The debate concerning what constitutes a 'big club' is often settled by emotions, bias and prejudice. But setting aside the last two, if there were 22 slots available (as in the old times) what would be the Division One, based on your life experience and feelings, that would feel the most 'right' to you ?

It's a difficult one as many of us have lived longer than others. But once done I may put together a table of tables.

The only criteria is that teams are ranked in what you perceive as final positions and Brighton cannot be included (but state if you would have put us in there and where had you been a neutral)

West Ham have spent most of their time in the top flight, with fleeting relegations. They belong in the top flight more than at least 6 of those clubs. They are the only club I'd argue actively on behalf of.

Clubs like Sheffield Weds, Birmingham and Stoke would also all have a case, but are much easier to argue against than West Ham.

Bolton, Blackburn, Charlton, Wigan, QPR and Portsmouth featured well in the 90s/00s

An interesting additional question would be:

What position (out of 92) would you place the Albion in?

My point is that emotionally I don't see them that way. The list is based on a form of subjection, but taking out bias and prejudice. I'm an Un-Chelsea fan and I'm not keen on United, but they had to take their respective places.

I really don't know. I still see us as a third division team done well. I quite like holding that as well. Keeps me humble about things.

Preston and Burnely probably above a few on the first list historically
Yeah, but folk are missing the exercise here. It's not about crude rankings, it's about how you feel about teams based on your own life.

My first memories of football are Burnley being a top team and the Spurs team of 60/61 when I jumped on the bandwagon as a very young kid. I stayed as a Spurs fan until I moved to Brighton and Peter Ward gave me a life sentence

The first game I remember listening to commentary on was the 1962 Cup final between Burnley and Spurs (I had to google the year!)

Strange table as it’s cumulative points. I’d be more interested in knowing our average league position
42.6 is the average Brighton position out of the 92 over the last 97 seasons.
