A much-changed line-up for tonight's fixture (despite what Albion say in their tweets, this is a fixture in the U-21 Premier League Cup, not a #PL2 fixture).

There is a debut at this level for 2nd-year scholar Callum Mackley. He usually plays at centre-back or in central midfield, but based upon the line-up it looks as though Harry Mills (usually a left-back) might be at right-back with Mackley at left-back.

There are first appearances this season for goalkeeper Steven Hall and Charlie Penman.

There are first starts this season for Yussif Owusu, Sahil Bashir, Remiero Moulton and Louis Flower.

Wasn't Flower going on loan or did I dream the whole thing?

It depends - maybe the club have taken up the practice of the BBC (and one or two on here) of listing the teams the wrong way round. Normally, the order would be GK, RB, RCB, LCB, LB etc. (as in traditional nos. 1,2,5,6,3) but some sources have now started listing the LB first - i.e. 1,3,5,6,2 (and the same further up the pitch, the left winger being listed before the right - GK, LB, LCB, RCB, RB).

Heresy, IMHO!

Edit: It appears that the heresy has spread!

All Albion so far, but no goals. Peupion keeps wanting too many touches. Owusu very involved from deep midfield.
Would love to know why Peupion, Turns and Samuels are still here (rather than being out on loan). I wonder if nobody wanted them?

They aren't going to benefit from U-21 football this season (having already spent time out on EFL loans) and I can't imagine they are going to get much (if any) first team experience.

I can only assume the same as you. Our fleet of loan youngsters are competing with fleets of loan players from the rest of the Premier League for a limited number of available spots in the lower leagues. After some failed loans last season, maybe the potential clubs just didnt fancy them.

I'm still a bit confused why we extended their contracts to be completely honest, without wanting to be cruel, none of these three are likely to threaten the first team, and its not as if theyre likely to fetch a big fee. Why not release them and let them go find themselves a club which will be invested in developing their own player?

Should be a couple of goals ahead, without playing amazing. Mullins looking decent I suppose, but nobody really standing out as a cut above on either side. So far.

I’m sorry to dig out one of our own, but Cam Peupion is having a bit of a nightmare out there so far. He’s lost the ball constantly, too many touches, bottled two 50/50’s and passed the ball straight out of play there at the end of the half, leading to a corner and a half chance for Reading.

The lad is just turning 22 - I think it’s the end of the road of his Albion journey very soon.

Peupion is a strange one. There's something about him that makes me think there's an excellent footballer in there....too good for the U21s, not quite consistant enough(yet) for the 1st team. He is quite rapid though, get the decision making sorted and he's another option down the left

I noticed the other day that Wolves had released four of their U-21s (the announcement was made on September 6 but it's possible their contracts were cancelled prior to the end of the transfer window). At least three of them signed two-year contracts just last summer. One of them has joined Rushall Olympic already.

When I read that I was surprised, but the thought immediately crossed my mind - I wonder if there is a similar announcement coming from Albion at some point?

I thought loans for Duffus and Flower were probables too - maybe also Hall. Still, perhaps we have to hold some back so our U21s team isn't entirely made up of actual children! :lolol:

TBF, Samuels and Peupion hardly benefitted from their loans - they got next to bugger-all playing time.

I can't believe their aren't teams in Leagues 1 and 2 - or even in Scotland - who wouldn't be improved by one or more of those players.

God moves in mysterious ways - and so sometimes does the Albion!
