If we're doing stalking Nick Cave stories, he was with his family at the table next to us in Polpo, New Road just after it opened about 7/8 years ago

There was an interview with him in the Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago. The interview took place in “a hotel near to Victoria Station so that he could be near to the stop that he gets off when travelling up from his Brighton home”.
Surprised me as like everyone I thought he had sold up and moved.

I saw him with the Birthday Party on three occasions in the very early 80s. The first was in October 1981 (see below).

There was another gig but I can't remember where. The last time was March 25 1983 at Hammersmith Palais supporting The Fall.

I had quite a long 'discussion' about including this song as part of our wedding ceremony playlist with the (now) wife.
We had agreed beforehand that we both had the power of veto for any choice we didn't like, so it didn't make the cut, sadly. 6 years on and she now agrees we should have included it...

I've seen Nick Cave many times over the years in the bit of Hove between Palmeira Square and Norfolk Square.

(Yes, pedants, I know Norfolk Square is Brighton)

I actually sang it at mine! Not sure I did it justice though, was so nervous I forgot much of the last verse.

I sat next to him on a bench in Brighton station, maybe around 2010. He had long black hair. Some people you can date the year by their hairstyle or colour, but with Nick that's not really possible.

I like some of his music - bought all his albums in the late 1980s and early 1990s - but know the modern stuff less well (some songs excepted). I like his decision to have views and explain them, not to go along with prevailing societal positions because some people might not like what he thinks.

Not sure I'd like to see him concert, though, but I'm sure he can cope with that.

All is not lost. You still both have it as a funeral option for which it would probably be more appropriate.

Cave actually performed it at Michael Hutchence's funeral.

I was driving a car in Rock Place, Kemp Town several years ago, he started to to walk across the road in front of me. We both stopped just in time!

We only had one song at our wedding, Nature Boy played after we’d done the dead and were wed.

I was going to save this for when I go on Graham Norton's show but me and my family sat next to him and his in Pizza Express in the Marina about 10 years ago.

When I lived on Norton Road in around 2002 I’d see him frequently enough in the Blockbusters opposite Hove Town Hall when I’d nip in that we got on nodding terms after he asked me what I thought of a film I’d returned. Up until the last year or two his wife had a fashion design space she used in Lewes and he signs off his emails Brighton/London so he’s in the area still (or has returned to the area).

Had a chat with Capt. Sensible but the award goes to John Kerry (Presidential nominee and Secretary of State) who was key note speaker at an event I was photographing. He came up and shook my hand. Gordon Brown who spoke incredibly eloquently was present too.

That's all very impressive but to qualify for this thread Nick Cave needed to be present too.

His wife's fashion label was The Vampire's Wife. It closed down in May of this year. They live mainly in London now, but did move to LA at some point following the death of his son as Brighton had become too painful for him.

Its strange as a few on here have now associated this song with their wedding which is understandable given the lyrics.

But I've always regarded it as more of a funeral song and as one I would have played at my funeral.

I didn't realise until a couple of days ago that Cave performed it at Michael Hutchence's funeral so my interpretation wasn't that off kilter after all.

I suppose it works equally well in either context depending on how it's interpreted.

She's devout catholic, I'm... not.
It's always been a a special song for us.
