I gave up on Peter James after three or four books, just seemed a bit waffley and padded to me

I too gave up on Wolf Hall and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. I found both utterly unenjoyable. Louis de Bernierès is an incredible author, every other book of his I’ve absolutely loved, but Captain Corelli’s Mandolin is dogshit.

I felt guilty about giving up on 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee'. I started reading Rand's 'The Fountainhead' but gave up as it was obvious that she was going to be banging on with the same unpleasant and simplistic ideas for over 300 more pages.
+ many more to be honest. I tend to apply the 50-page rule and if a book hasn't grabbed me by then I move on.

I've read every de Bernierès book except CCM. I've just never had the inclination to even start it, probably due to the associations with the film, which i haven't actually seen.

Not exactly a classic but having been persuaded to read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone I made it to chapter 3 before throwing it out the window.
I can still picture the lovely arcing trajectory it took across the room just brushing beneath the lampshade and picking up a little fade on its downward path to rustle through the gap of the partially open casement window. So it that respect it has brought me more lasting joy than many books that I finished.
