As with all Brighton players i'm hoping he does well.

But I can't shake the thoughts ....

  • He looked bad for Leeds in their relegation season.
  • His goalscoring record is bad and there is a general consensus it's the weakest part of his game, (he's a forward)
  • The sighters he had at the Emirates didn't inspire confidence
  • The comments about him needing 3 or 4 games in succession to get good, also worry me. Who are we going to drop from our forward line to give him enough games to get good?

Very early days of course. I just seem to have less high hopes for this signing than our other expensive signings

Very early days but I have seen nothing in his cameos yet to make me think “yep, that’s a 40 million pound player”

He's not really a ST. He's more of second striker/attacking midfielder. A Firmino type.

He needs to play off a ST. Basically, the position J.Pedro is currently playing.

He assisted 16 goals for Leeds last season and another this season before leaving. He's very creative.

19 mins of PL action so far. Way too early to judge.

Positionally it seems like he’s effectively replaced Buononotte. So my bar is whether he is an upgrade on him. He can’t do anything about the fee we paid (which does seem extraordinarily high).

This is the one I'm most concerned about, I don't believe in the player. But I do believe in the club and the algorithm that identified him, so we'll see how he goes.

Agreed it's way too early to judge,

He's featured so far for us off the right, which I guess isn't his best position.

Joao Pedro is completely undroppable at the moment, but I can see Rutter getting time in a central position, if Welbeck goes off and Pedro is shunted farther forward

I wonder if there is any prospect of him playing in a midfield two, given our injury issues there?

Adopting a system similar to Pep's would allow Brighton to play with two central players in the final 3rd.

Enciso and Gruda can also play the two advanced central positions in this system. O'Riley too.

Something worth trying vs weaker opponents.

Welbeck

Mitoma-------J.Pedro-----Rutter-------Minteh

Wieffer-----Baleba

Estupiñán-------Dunk-----van Hecke

Verbruggen

These aren't the players you're looking for.

Why would you play 2 number 6s against weaker opponents?

Drop Baleba, play Ferdi on the right of a back 4 and play Rutter next to (slightly ahead of) Wieffer.

When Pascal Gross left the club he took 10 assists per season with him. We need to replace that somehow. Rutter is a different type of player but I believe is capable of playing at number 8 or number 10 if needed as well as out wide where he's come on in the last couple of games. All positions where you're looking for creativity first and foremost.

I wouldn't look too much into his form during Leeds relegation season, he played 11 games as a 20 year old playing in a new country having joined a relegated side mid-season. That's a tough ask for anyone to perform at their highest level.

I do wonder if we have looked at his stats and will try and convert him into a different type of player dropping a little deeper into the midfield. For me he doesn't look to be an out and out striker as the price tag suggests. I guess we will have to wait and see, but I expect to see slow development for him in a stacked position for places.

I lose track. Was he the one Fabian stated that he might be playing him in a different position when he signed?

The Leeds fan I spoke to about him said they are a better team without him and he is amazed that anyone met the release clause

He said specifically that he's good at taking players on in the Championship, but that often he lost the ball when doing this and the got hit on turnovers.

Just passing it on!
