I read an article about this once, featuring agents and others. The main reason seems to be “motivated seller”. Thinking of it like buying property, this is often a “chain”. So one player can’t be let go until another one comes in, for financial or squad balance reasons.

With loans, there are a lot of motivated buyers and sellers and it has just become an unwritten rule that business just gets done on the final day. Reasons for this are buyers being willing to pay what they weren’t before (desperation), clubs being willing to sell for lower demands, players worrying about being trapped at a club where they won’t play for another 5 months, agents lowering their fees to get moves over the line…
I can see that for sales - doesn't really add up for loans, IMHO. I doubt if when a young player goes on loan to League 1 to get a taste of grown-up football there's much in it for the agent!

There’s always something for the agent ;)

I realise permanent deals might go to the wire - like obvious reasons why this happened with Gilmour and Dahoud - but why the loans left until the last minute? Is there any reason why, for instance, Offiah couldn't have gone to Blackpool a week ago, or more? What was there to hold up a deal? Or Cozier-Duberry to Blackburn, Sarmiento to Burnley, etc.

It’s never that black and white. We may have wanted to keep some of those players around while we secured our own transfer targets. New manager means players are starting with a clean slate in some cases and maybe he wanted to look at them in more depth before deciding what to do with them.

Also the clubs we have sent them to may have had their own targets that didn’t come off so they had to go to the loan market for an alternative or they’ve had to make space in their squad so they could afford to pay the wages/any loan fee for those players.

So after all the goings today (as not many comings!) we are left with, out of 33 players who have appeared or been on the bench during the first three games this season, 24 (only Ferguson of these 24 hasn't yet played any minutes) with only as I can see it, Gruda, Kadioglu and March to join these players so our 25 man Premier League squad has pretty much picked itself and will include all of these 27 players as a fair few will count as home grown players. So are we really as well stocked as we think we are and ready to go again for Europe? I'm sadly not so sure especially as it won't take much for injuries to deciamte the list further and leave very little in the way of experienced back ups. Delighted to be proved wrong but have to say a little concerned.

Players who have been included in squads this season (*=loaned out, **=sold) [Gruda, Kadioglu and March to be added to the list]

As I posted above, we’ve just spent £65 million quid on two midfielders (both fit for Saturday ) who have much better stats for FB than Gilmour.

Why are some people wetting the bed over us selling Gilmour? - he wasn’t even the first choice for RDZ for much of last season - he wasn’t indispensable then, even less so now for a manager that wants to improve our xG by bringing in MFs that can score frickin’ goals.

Yeah he was. He played every game he was available for.

Not every player has to driectly improve the XG to be of worth Zeberdi. His replacements may be better, and they probably will be.

I am not 'wetting the bed' over us selling him but he is a player that I liked and added a lot to our midfield, i would have hoped to get more cash fo him too. Still, he wanted to go and I wish him nothing but the best of luck in Italy.
I didn’t accuse anyone by name of bedwetting so not sure why you think my post was directed at you. 🤷‍♂️ I also wasn’t talking about “every player” - I was specifically referring to our central midfield players.

Hürzeler has made it very clear he want‘s his midfielder’s to be servicing the ball to our strikers and scoring goals themselves which Minteh and Rutter will do. Mac Allister wasn’t a prolific goal scorer in open play but he invariably got the ball to the edge of the 18 yard box and provided the ball that led to the assist.

Marcel Hartel is an attacking midfielder that was St Pauli’s top goal scorer - so to me, that’s an indication of how Hürzeler’s system worked cf to De Zerbi’s last year - it suggests our goal scoring problems were generated deeper in attacking midfield than in the 18 yard box (despite some woeful tap in finishing) lending some validity to the thinking that losing McAllister impacted the double pivot in RDZ’s system at the base of the box where MacAllister was so often the key to providing the final pass to our forwards.

MacAllister wasn’t a prolific goal scorer (his conversion rate wasn’t great) despite creating great goal scoring opportunities scoring 10 goals in 2022/3 but again only 3 from open play. It was MacAllister’s counter-pressing skills that we missed and his link up play in CAM (as a #10). I think that’s was one of our main weak areas of attack last season.

If Hürzeler wants to pack the midfield out with versatile players like Hartel and Mac Allister, I’m all for it.

Under FB, Marcel Hartel was St Pauli’s top goal scorer (21 goals and 15 assists across all comps last season). Our goal distribution from wide players is excellent but last season we missed Mackie’s role.

You asked why people were disappointed that he has left, I answered with my thoughts and feels on the matter (your chosen words were bed-wetting so I addressed that too).

Perhaps you could explitcly list the posters allows to reply to your questions.

Don’t be silly - nobody ever lists ‘specific posters’ when calling out bedwetters 😂

My question was rhetorical and wasn’t ‘why are people ‘disappointed (I get the disappointment ) but why they were ‘bed wetting’ ie panicking that we have no midfield left etc when we’ve just spent over £65 million on a new midfield!

Btw, I completely agree with you on two accounts:

I will be sad to see Gilmour leave - I love the lad
I think £12M is a p*ss take.

I just don’t agree with some folk that the Club is making a mistake by selling him or that, given our summer recruits, he is indispensable.

My guess (and it is only a guess) is that it takes time to find the best loan environment for each player and the people who arrange our loans simply use the time available to them. My work is deadline-based. If I'm done early, I use the "extra" time to make sure everything's perfect.

There's also the fact we only control one half of the process. For example, imagine we've identified a team where a player of ours will play a lot and develop the specific skills that the club wants him to develop, but that team is waiting for a sale to go through before they can commit. I imagine we'd wait until close to the deadline if the alternative was even slightly less ideal (e.g., the player staying and not getting to play, or going on loan to whatever club was second-choice).

All guesswork as I said, I just find this stuff interesting to think about.

We have spent over £200 million, yet tomorrow, we line up with a threadbare midfield against the gooners, one fit recent addition, Rutter.
Luckily the club play the long game. We are in great shape and a couple of short term (and one longer term) injuries shouldn't detract from an amazing window. Let's be honest, if the Crawley psycho hadn't got involved, we'd all be purring. Get Wieffer, Gruda and Ferdi up and running and fully fit and we have an amazing squad with O'Riley and probably Gomez to come. Also everyone predicted a big sale (eg Pedro, Adingra or Mitoma) and we have retained everyone we wanted apart from possibly Gilmour. Excellent work and  if we are very slightly light for a week or two in midfield then that's just the way it goes and, if we lose today, let's not press the panic button.
