I'm sure it was done with the very best of intentions but did you bother to look up the history of the song? Firstly, the song does not belong to Brighton and Hove Albion and or their fans. It was however adopted by the Royal Sussex Regiment during the Great War, a regiment that suffered horrendous losses. And for me, when we sing it, it's not only a celebration of the Albion but also a commemoration of the those soldiers.

Personally, I don't see any need to 'update' it. Maybe that's because I'm a bit long in the tooth and a bit of a traditionalist.

But a certain word Beginning with G meant being happy in those days, Not what it means now.
Which is why the home supporters refuse to sing it, and actually only sing the chorus.
It does need updating to reflect this. But good luck

The home supporters? You mean some home supporters.

It still does.

The attempt at rewriting it is admirable, but awful at the same time. I didn't make it past the second line.

Just leave it alone

You mean 'gay'.

Home supporters don't refuse to sing it, or very few do. Most folk aren't so uptight as to be concerned by it.

The original song is a traditional Sussex theme and should not be altered in any way. Just my take on it. But I think most would agree.

The 'going up to win the cup' thing was fine, but folk wanted to return to the old song because it somewhat adulterated it when compared.

But the 'gay' thing. Juvenile opposition supporters may smirk, but we're more grown up than that, aren't we ? (y)

Have to say I'm not aware of any supporters refusing to sing that part. However, if they are, get a life.
