Calling England "shìt" after the Denmark match was really unprofessional. We knew it wasn't good but we grew into the tournament and finishing runners-up was still a very good effort.
You could see it in his eyes that he wanted Spain to beat England in the final of the Euros because a.) he can speak fluent Spanish and b.) he didn't win anything with England (ok, he got the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico) - semi-final at Italia '90 was the nearest he got.
He makes Eddie Howe look the most humble person in the world with his SMUGNESS.

I don’t like his side hustle in needlessly inflammatory one liners on the big issues of the day. Nothing he, or any other celeb at the Oscars, ever changes anything. It’s not how positive change comes about, and does little but create hostility and confrontation in a world which has far too much of these things. I’m talking both sides of the political sphere here. It simply doesn’t help. Ever.
All that said, he’s developed into a top quality presenter and pundit, and I enjoy his work when he talks about football. He had a very rocky start but has persisted and matured superbly.

I like him as a presenter and he never takes himself too seriously. He admitted he never thought Leicester would win the Premier League, and foolishly said he would present MOTD in his underpants. He cheated, of course, wearing shorts, but still with a sense of humour.

For balance, he's paid the industry standard by all accounts - Neville and Carragher on similar and no one is calling for Sky to dump them and lower their subscription fees.
Match of the Day still gets around 3-4 million viewers every week (ITV's live community shield coverage got 1.2m viewers for comparison), the studio is shared by all BBC sport productions and incredibly cost effective these days (it's just a massive green screen), they have a small, incredibly functional production team who produce a world class show in essentially one day, and the programme makes the BBC commercial revenue outside of its production through the licensing/production of the magazine and books.
Match of the Day is part of our collective cultural history and I really don't think we should be cutting costs on things like this, we should be happy to see money being invested in such a high-quality product - and Lineker is a huge part of that quality.

A great achievement, but you do wonder how it would have turned out if Des, hadn't jumped ship to ITV?
How long would have Des gone on for at the Beeb?
And would young Gary have tired of being the support act and either gone to, ironically, ITV or Sky?

Des said working after 10.30 on a Saturday night was getting too much in 1999. It was two years later that ITV started covering the then 'Premiership at 7pm. It was later moved to 10.30 following disappointing viewing figures.

Yes I agree he certainly likes to incite division and hatred within our country, he will soon be locked up by Keir Jon Un.

I'm afraid IMO Gary has had his day. He's about as exciting as a turd stuck in your bog, and zero personality.
Surely the Beeb could find a younger, cheaper, and better presenter. My grandson is 4 and he makes more sense than GL.

I used to like him. Now I think he's an overpaid idiot.
Frankly I whizz through the highlights anyway, and only stop to hear the pundits talk at the end of our match. Given they get another presenter for say £250k instead of his £1.5million they should just do that and it wouldn't detract from the show at all.
