Interesting to wake up to this! Just popped over to WACCOE to check the pulse of the natives and,, unsurprisingly, they are gutted/angry in equal measure. Surprisingly though, there’s no anti Albion sentiment…was expecting a ”why them/tinyclub/teams like Brighton” attitude but none to date. Aside from the digital tears, one poster said that Rutter was heard telling Johnny Howson (another Dirty Leeds player) that he’s off.
As you still have access to WACCOE, I can thoroughly recommend reading through the Ben White thread from his first game MOTM performance through to us eventually selling him to Arse for 50m+, despite assumptions that we would be getting relegated that season and have to sell for peanuts.

I have, mate, it’s gold. I go back to it occasionally…rather like watching a favourite episode of Peep Show or the Inbetweeners for when I want to indulge in puerile humour!

Why what? Why do I not understand the strategy?
IMO having Rutter, Gruda, Enciso, Joao Pedro, Sarmiento, Osman (+ Buonanotte) all on the books with their primary position being number 10, means we're going to have to let some of them go, but they're all really talented players and I think we should be giving them proper game time to develop here. I can't see how the club will be able to keep them all happy in the long term, and we will end up having to let one or two go for far less than had we given them proper game time to develop them. When we're spending £40million on a player we already have lots of already, that doesn't make sense to me.

You could argue some of the players I mentioned can play other positions, but then you'd have the same issue in those positions too.
It makes more sense IF the club has just received a big offer for Joao Pedro, Adringa or Enciso.

The headline figures look big but we really aren't spending a massive amount as far as PSR is concerned. Our current transfer spend affects the accounts to the tune of about £22m a year. Even if we sign Rutter and Ferdi (and give them 5 year deals) the amount that would go on the accounts for this season is still pretty much covered by the sales of Undav and Gross.
I admit to being confused by this.
So is it the case that purchases can be spread over the length of the contract but sales are counted in the year of the sale?

Undav replacement? Possibly. Gross replacement? Possibly. Someone else leaving? Possibly. Whatever it is Tony is being proactive so losing a player would already be covered.

Pretty much. Purchases are spread over the length of the contract (up to a maximum of 5 years).

The amount included in the accounts for a sale will have any money still owing on the original transfer fee taken off.

Thats why clubs in PSR trouble have been selling acadmey products as they represent pure profit in the accounts.

Gross would have represented pure profit for the accounts, his fee long since amortised. Undav sale would probably still have around half his fee to take off (that’s likely to only be a couple of million though), plus any sell on clause owed to USG.
