The Liberal Democrats have become embroiled in a row over their campaign tactics for the local elections after claims they're encouraging children to canvass for them by offering them sweets.

The conservatives today claimed the lib dem election handbook was irresponsible and encouraged children to accept sweets from strangers.

The Conservative Party deputy chairman Eric Pickles said :"No responsible adult should ever entice unsupervised children to take sweets from strangers."

The Tories say the election handbook urges candidates and supporters to "shout at all the local kids you can see and hear...then proceed Pied Piper like round the estate doling out badges and toffees and leaflets."

A Liberal Democrats spokesman said they would respond shortly to the claims.

Lord Chris Rennard, Liberal Democrat Chief Executive, said:
"This is a ridiculous rehash of absurd allegations. All political parties find that young people are often willing deliverers of party literature."
A spokesperson for the party added:
"Rather than launching negative attacks on our opponents, Liberal Democrats will be campaigning during these elections on the issues that matter to local people, such as the environment, Council Tax, crime and anti-social behaviour."

I don't mind the Lib Dems giving children sweets. It's only when they ask the kids to shit in their handbags afterwards that it all goes a bit iffy.
