Why can't Kuipers save pens?

Before you all say, look at Man City, the fact remains that Kuipers saves very few pens.

Did anyone see his movement for some of the pens. It was terrible, he kinda went to the right but didn't actually commit to it, meaning that a pen hit right, left or in the centre would be a goal.

Why is it that a professional keeper, who is a very good shot stopper, is so tactically inept when it comes to saving pens?

To be fair, and if my memory serves me correctly, 3 of the 4 penalties they took were pretty damn good ones. Can't remember his record in normal games.

He's all about reactions. On penalties you have to think. Even when he goes the right way (not often) his dives aren't convincing.

It's quite a good point actually, I'd suspect him to much better at trying to save a penalty.

Having said that, if you hit a good penalty hard fast and low into a bottom corner they are almost impossible to save.

There was a documentary on the BBC many years ago about penalties - did anyone see it ?

It came to three conclusions, some more obvious than others :lolol:

1) Practice, practice, practice.

Unfortunately for years it was understood to be the case of "anything could happen" now. You still here commentators saying that, but actually the psychologists suggested you need to go into them thinking it's your best opportunity to win the game and be prepared for it.

2) Believe it or not, statistically hitting the ball low hard and fast into the corner is the best way of scoring !

3) Interesting one this. They suggested that sending your best penalty takers players out first may not be the best policy. As the shoot out goes on, the pressure gets higher on the players least able to deal with it.

One decent save from him, the rest of his performance was quite frankly embarrassing, we got what we deserved. Listening to Gary Birtles commentary on SKY had me actually laughing out loud "Brighton are playing it absolutely right with only ten men on a sticky pitch, lots of long balls, by-passing the midfield for people to run on to", he obviously didn't realise that's how we play every game under Adams!

He invests all his effort in the the pre penalty clowning around and if that doesnt put the taker off he has nothing left. Terrible performance last night.

Kuipers has never had a clue with penalties....the keepers who have a higher than average save rate from the spot are good readers of body language...e.g Paul Cooper and Mark Crossley ( the only man to save a Le Tissier pen )...Shilton, as good as he was, was bloody useless at trying to save pens...remember those England shoot-outs !
On Kuipers......
Strengths
1) Instinctive shot stopper, preferably close range blasts, where there is no time to think.
2)Is a dominant figure and controls the six yard box pretty well.
Weaknesses
1) Regularly beaten from longer range...20 yards +...and not a good judge of angles i.e low shots cutting across him.
2) Moments of aberration that spoil the moments of brilliance.
3) Kicking.....has always been poor ( those that have displaced him have always been better in this department...e.g Roberts and Sullivan )
4) Penalties ( as above )

Sully should never have been dropped.

Kuipers was shite last night, looked like a 12 year old in goal.

Isn't hindsight wonderful? Sully has been poor for the last two games.

Some other interesting questions to ponder in relation to our players.

Why can't the back four defend as a unit?
Why can't the midfield pass?
why can't the wingers cross?
Why can't our dead-ball 'specialists' take a decent corner or free kick?
Why can't our forwards convert a higher proportion of their goal-scoring opportunities?

I think you may find the answer is that if they had this ability they wouldn't be playing for us but a club with more prospects of success and a better remuneration package.

I find this sort of thread far more upsetting than the ones about our clueless manager. We're talking about a loyal club servant here who down the years has time and again fought for his place after being dropped by several managers. He's far more of a BHA legend than Micky "one promotion" Adams will ever be. I don't recall Kuipers bitching and moaning that bigger clubs weren't coming in for him when times were good. The same sort of thing with Mayo and Hart. Two more absolute legends who were pointlessly re-signed. They were a complete waste of wages, but thank f*** they haven't played - we'd have seen them being absolutely slaughtered by some of the younger muppets on here if they had.

Kuipers, Mayo and Hart - all Albion legends of yesteryear. Please let them stay there with some dignity. I'd rather none of them played again so that we could remember them all as HEROES.
