Racegoers at Southwell were left stunned when 125-1 shot Tioga Gold triumphed at Tuesday's meeting.

The eight-year-old took the handicap over a mile and six furlongs.

The Ed James-trained gelding, ridden by Russell Kennemore, beat Nayodabayo (9-2) by just under a length, with 11-4 favourite Bulberry Hill back in fourth.

Tioga Gold was winning his first race since 2001, and a £1 Tote exacta bet on the first two home in the eight-runner race paid a dividend of £870.10.

1.20 Southwell

1st 8 Tioga Gold (IRE) 125-1
2nd 7 Nayodabayo (IRE) 9-2
3rd 2 Dan's Heir 15-2

Tote Win £84.20
Pl £17.10, £1.90, £2.60
EX £870.10
SF £604.34
Tricast £4767.90

Someone had £20 on in running at 1000 on Betfair. Was also traded at 689-1 before the race.

The 2-5 fav in the race 10 minutes later at Ayr was also backed at 1000 in running, oddly enough. Got up to win on the line after looking cooked a furlong out.

Bookmakers William Hill reported that one female internet customer was £625 richer after staking £5 on Tioga Gold to win.

Bet the jammy mare pressed the wrong button as well, women.

FWIW, Equinoctial, who won a novice hurdle at 250-1 at Kelso in 1990, is the biggest-priced winner in British racing history - and as it happens, I know someone who backed it (£10 each-way, returned £3000). Of course, I'm assuming you were on too, Uncle?

Aside from Tioga Gold 125/1 at Southwell yesterday you can bet your life Spielberg was on...

Arctic Blue, at 200-1, won at Chepstow in 2005.

The Great Delaney 150-1 was another big-priced victor at Chepstow 2006.

Beechy Bank, another 200-1 chance, won at Warwick in 2002.

A horse called Equinoctial was a 250-1 winner at Kelso in 1990

How the hell did you know, I also had Norton's Coin in the Gold Cup at 100/1

Bet he was on Norton's Coin at 100/1 in 1990 too.

He must of read my mind. No-wonder he's so good as this betting lark :dunce:
