Brighton are doing brilliantly, and it might well continue, but plenty of teams have been top at the end of October and it hasn't lasted.

Here is the last decade in League 1 and their finishing positions:

2010 Leeds 2nd
2009 Scunthorpe 6th
2008 Carlisle 4th
2007 N Forest 4th
2006 Southend 1st
2005 Luton 1st
2004 Plymouth 1st
2003 Cardiff 6th
2002 Brentford 3rd
2001 Reading 3rd
2000 Notts County 8th

So only 4 teams out of the last 11 years top at the end of October have got automatic promotion.

It does show that Brighton are highly likely to at least make the play-offs, as that has not happened since Notts County in 2000.

Food for thought.

or put another way, EVERY team top of the league at end of October has either been promoted or made the play-offs?

I think most of us would have taken that at the start of the season.

Surely the more relevant stat is how many teams 8 points clear at the end of October have NOT gone on to get promotion?

2010/11 - Brighton (8 points clear) - 14 games - ?
2009/10 - Leeds (6 points clear) - 15 games - 2nd
2008/9 - Scunthorpe (Level, +4 goal diff) - 14 games - 6th
2007/8 - Carlisle (1 point clear, having played an extra game) - 13 games - 4th
2006/7 - Notts Forest (5 pts clear) - 16 games - 4th
2005/6 - Southend (2 points clear) - 16 games - 1st
2004/5 - Luton Town (6 points clear, having played an extra game) - 16 games - 1st
2003/4 - Plymouth (3 points clear) - 16 games - 1st

2002/3 - Cardiff City (1 point clear) - 16 games - 6th
2001/2 - Brentford (2 points clear with a game in hand) - 15 games - 3rd

Nine seasons, can't find stats for the previous season.

No team has been more than 6 points clear before now and both of them were promoted. They had also played at least one extra game.

love the response from Poshminx. very gracious considering we took them apart!

"We were well outplayed by a team that wouldn't look out of place in the Championship. I enjoyed watching their play ... just a shame they were showing us up.

If that is what Gus does with players ... good luck to Brighton ... think he is a gem"

"No team has scored more than six and they've both been promoted".

If no team has done it, how have they both been promoted?

"No team has been more than 6 points clear before now and both of them were promoted"

=

No team has been more than 6 points clear at the end of October before Brighton achieved that feat and both of those clubs ere eventually promoted.

I'm sure you knew what I meant. I was fiddling with the curry at the time of posting.

I think you mean "Two teams have been 6 points clear at this stage and both were promoted. No team has been more than six points clear at this stage".

Yes, I knew what you meant, which is why I chuckled at the awkward wording, instead of looked all confused.
