Ugly concrete architecture.

I think Kate Moss comes from there too, but she left quick enough, to be fair. And probably keeps it very quiet these days.

East Croydon station advertises the fact that Croydon is the home of nestle.

I'm not entirely sure why somewhere would want to associate itself with a company blamed by many for the deaths of thousands of babies.

Easy access to the very sought after south coast?

Not a million miles from the truth, according to Wikipedia.

The development of Brighton as a fashionable resort in the 1780s increased Croydon's role as a significant halt for stage coaches on the road south of London.

Poor old Croydon, eh? Was then and still is now merely a stopping point for all those seeking to escape the dirty big city life.

In a house like that
Your Uncle Dick was born;
Satchel on back he walked to Whitgift
Every weekday morn. Boys together in Coulsdon woodlands,
Bramble-berried and steep,
He and his pals would look for spadgers,
Buried deep. The laurels are speckled in
Marchmont Avenue Just as they were before,
But the steps are dusty that still lead up to
Your Uncle Dick's front door.Pear and apple in
Croydon gardens
Bud and blossom and fall,
But your Uncle Dick has left his Croydon
Once for all.

Croydon, Sir John Betjeman.

the source of the river wandle is under the swan and sugar loaf pub in south croydon, the wandle in central croydon used to be 20 feet wide and was famous for its excellent trout fishing.
