Steve Gritt, he managed to enspire a quite awful Albion team to avoid the drop from the league, most of the others have had fairly decent squads to work with and have therefore achieved more in terms of winning things.

...message understood Woody, I have been following the Albion for 30 years on that mad emotional rollercoaster, the draw at Hereford probably meant more to me and the future of the team that I support than even the Cup Final did!

gritt did a fantastic short term job with an awful side, but couldn't sustain that really over the next season and never really progressed, and for that he will be overlooked in polls like this

adams took an average side(nowhere near as bad as the one gritt had), demolished it, put it back together and got us to the 1st division and for that he will always be my favourite(as i am too young to remember the mullery's etc.), the nucleus of that side was still here until very recently

  • That is one bloody amazing record when you think about it, isn't it? Can you imagine anyone ever coming that close in the modern game?

Froma quick look at that it suggests that Peter Taylor and Mickey Adams were very good managers for us, whilst Jimmy Case, despite being a marvellous player, was an utter utter shite manager.:)

No way is it Mullery, a great motivator but got well and truly found out managing at a decent level, and not only at the Albion.

But he did get us into the top flight (and it should have been a year earlier but for those cheating Saints and Spurs) and kept us there.

Shame that no one is old enough to have seen him and he will just be forgotten, with a record like that he should be the greatest manager in Albion history.

And won the vote in the Argus Dream Team (where most of the players were from Mullery's era)

Micky Adams. If he hadn't come here we would still be down with the Rochdales and Orients.

Gone for Mullery, but for entertainment value - Brady.

Anyone remember the interview when he was told "if you'd scored more goals you would have won" - and he replied with "if my granny had balls she'd be my grandad" and walked off.....after an FA Cup exit, I think it was.

Mullery made the mistake of coming back (although the figures actually make it look like his second spell was better!). He was a star at the time we needed a big name, big personality to manage us, and he did wonders for us. MA pulled us back out of the barrel of shit we found ourselves in and deserves recognition for that. Taylor could have been a legend, but wouldn't stay with a club that had no ground, no cash, etc.
