Not really. He played Rugby for his school and sussex as he was growing up.

However, he only started taking it 'seriously' at 16 or 17 after his football career began faltering.

Joe El Abd

True Story:

Last April, I was in a trendy wine bar (that used to be a bank). I was celebrating a 3oth Birthday of a very attractive Norwegian girl.

In the adjacent room the Bristol Shoguns came into celebrate their promotion to the Premiership! I knew a few through their University days and I invited them in to give the girl a birthday treat!

I was introduced to Joe El Abd and on his day of greatest sporting triumph amidst an adoring posse of very very fit women, he was greeted with the words;
"My god your Adam El Abds brother how is he?"

I said I was the only person ever in Bristol to say that to him! Top bloke btw cos he gave me his champagne bottle!

Seems that being a big fucker runs in the family! I thought Adam was big but he's 10cm taller and 20kg heavier! Been down to see Bristol a few times this season but he has always been an unused sub every time. Wonder if I could have got a 'Joey on the right side of the scrum, El Abd, El Abd, El Abd, El Abd chant going!

Wasn't Joe El Abd once on the Albion's books as a trainee?

Didn't get a professional contract, but I'm sure he played in the youth sides for a bit.

He started playing rugby at Varndean in the Second year so 17 odd. He fell out with the footie coach and decided to give it a go.

He was pretty good then - didn't quite understand the rules and put in plenty of neck tackles. I would like to say i played a part in his rugby skills as i played at no 8 once as an emergency (usually a winger!!) but i would be lying through my teeth.

Really good bloke. He does alot of training with the Bristol Juniors as well.
