I would suggest they are removing the layer of tarmac ready to dig down.

Yup, they originally dug down to pitch level, then put a different surface on top that would support the weight of all the building equipment. I think they'll need to dig a fair way to put in the undersoil heating.

They layed a desso grassmaster and re-layed the undersoil heating at Molineux over the summer and they had to dig a long way down to do so.

You can watch it on the webcam yesterday, the mud you can see isn't mud or puddles of water, it's the layer of chalk under the gravel, which was layed for the heavy machinery.

They said it all starts THIS YEAR. They do indeed have to remove the hardcore required by all the cranes etc then the pitch preparation begins.
