This is from an article ive found from the Star, a Nigerian newspaper:

I was a part of an investigating team of a weekly sports newspaper in 1992, who tried to unravel the riddle over Taribo West’s age when he was surprisingly invited by Coach James Peters to the national Under-20 team for the African Youth Championship in Mauritius.

Before the call-up, West had been playing for years in what was then National First Division league for various clubs, notably Sharks, Obanta United, Enugu Rangers and then Julius Berger. In the course of our thorough investigations, we found that three of the players licences from different clubs endorsed by the NFA League Department bore three different dates of birth. We also found out, based on NFA documents that for the player to be 18 at the time, he would have been playing top class football in Nigeria at the age of 12.

Armed with copies of these licences and the discrepancies therein, we published our story only to be bombarded by phone calls from FA headquarters branding us unpatriotic, irresponsible and enemies of the nation. Of course Taribo did go to Mauritius and his career happily blossomed from there, but instead of acknowledging flaws exposed by a fantastic piece of investigative journalism, the NFA, the player and his agents launched a terrible campaign of calumny against the newspaper and its editors.
Obafemi Martins is right to feel offended by an alleged misinformation, which by all practical purposes could be ruinous to his career, but he needs to provide the nation with evidence that he is the age he claims he is. For proof, we will require nothing other than genuine, original birth certificate dully signed by constituted authorities of the local government council in place during his birth. If he has them, then whoever posted the offensive information on date of birth on the website deserves not only to lose his job but be charged for gross incompetence and defamation. Until this proof surfaces however, his threats to boycott the national team is what late Afro musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti might term “shakara”

So three different birth certificates, and been playing in local football for years, doesnt make him 31. Plymouth should rip up his contract.
