Stewards at railway station

Whilst being pelted with stones and coins on the down ramp of the Lewes train side of the station it was clear that the stewards' only way of communication between themselves and the police was shouting, which, with the numbers of people around, was totally ineffective.

Fortunatly for us the queue was moving, following the departure of the 22:05 train so we were able to get out of harms way fairly quickly. Once on the platform I asked both the stewards at the gate to the station and the first policeman there what they were doing to stop the stone throwers and they were not even aware of the problem.

Would it be a good idea for stewards on the ramps to have radios in order to advise "steward control" of probelms to protect both themselves and the crowd. I appreciate the club has little or no control over the policing but it seemed there was a very slow response to what could have been a massive problem with many children and elderly on the ramp.
