Sports Argus - RIP

Mendoza

NSC's Most Stalked
As NSC likes its random RIP's, I thought I would start one as I have now finished reading the last ever edition which was printed yesterday.

My adventures into media whoring started here, and I for one am said to see it go.

Its finest article may just well have been 20 Questions with Doug Loft

It did indeed have it's moments of journalistic brilliance . The 20 questions section was often dull with the worst christmas present question normally being answered by socks. (Mushy's answers were always class..."whats on your ipod?" Mushy "What's an ipod)
I was interested to read the reasons for is demise, the obvious being the economic climate, among others mentioned was the need for instant information in the age of the web which is a worry as the Argus site goes to sleep over the weekend and is still running stories from Friday as the main "latest headlines"
Sad to see it go, it's coverage of non league footy in Sussex was great towards the end

Typical Argus, to end it just as the season begins.

I used to like the Fishing section.. although brief, it gave an idea of what was coming up and where.

As a microcosm of the whole problem it is so easy to go to World Sea Fishing Forums and go to South Coast reports and you have so much information from the horses mouth at the touch of a button.

bye bye Sports Argus....

As a bye-line The Sports Argus was one of the few regular purchases made by a well known Short,Drunk,Jobless,Scrounging Brighton supporter from Worthing who has made it a lifetimes obsession to obtain entry to football matches by not paying..... Answers on a postcard anyone ?..... oops no postcards either these days ! LOL

The Argus has made hundreds of people redundant in the last few years. It really is a sinking ship.

They suffered even more when lots of estate agents pulled out of advertising in the Property News in protest at the Argus causing panic amongst buyers by predicting the housing market slump.

Even more revenue lost now as they have had pressure from an MP to stop the advertising of massage parlours and escorts. More jobs to go?

I bought the last SA yesterday and ten minutes later it was in the bin (sorry recycling). There really is, sadly, no need for it, so I can understand why its gone, especially if the recently publicised circulations figs are accurate.

Sad to see it go, but entirely understand the reasons why. The challenge for them now is to make sure the website delivers, and get brave and inventive as media technology develops.

Tough times for local newspapers at the moment.

I stopped buying The Argus about 8 years ago and now only buy it if told of anything that I should see like the picture of the crowd at OGH testimonial which showed myself, Ben and my brother in law amongst other of course. Must admit I haven't missed it but as young man it was an essential as there was no internet for news.

before the SA the Argus used to feature different local sports throughou the week (for example, tuesday always had the local Sunday league scores)

When you look at some of the smaller local papers, they remind me of what the Argus used to be like, packed with local news and reports. Doubt we'll ever see those days again but, as BensGrandad says, the Argus really was the place for local news and essential reading.

I love the way they report that the online site will improve to make up for the loss of the Sports Argus. It's taken them 23 hours to get a match report up for yesterday.
