So we can only win medals stting down eh?

How many medals do they win which aren't water related; swimming, diving, rowing, sailing, water polo? They are a real athletics powerhouse aren't they?

I'm not knocking the fact that they have done well in the past, but perhaps those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones eh?

I was interested to note that South Africa won only one medal in the Olympics, a silver.

What's that all about?

I would hazard a guess that the South Africans cannot afford to spend what we (and yes, The Aussies) do on training facilities and academies.

It's not just the South Africans that have done badly though...Look at how poorly the likes of France, Spain, Sweden & Portugal have all done at the last olympics.

Hey, give 'em a break.

For most Americans, just the realisation that THERE ARE OTHER COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD is going to be hard to take.

Doesn't seem to harm their rugby or cricket teams, though. Or their football team to a certain extent.

Also, plenty of less prosperous African countries who obliterated that medal 'haul'.

South African sport is having a bit of a mini crisis at the moment. A pathetic medal haul at the Olympics, the Rugby team getting stuffed at home by both New Zealand and Australia in a week and now yesterdays stuffing in the cricket!! The South African football team is very poor (dont think they won a match at the last African Cup of Nations) and not likely to get better soon.

Im afraid, like a lot of governments around the world, the SA government talk a good game but when it comes to putting their hands in their pockets, then they suddenly go quiet!! Will be interesting to see what initiatives, if any, are forthcoming as there does not seem to be an awful lot of investment in youth sport at the moment, other than those done privately (like Supersports "Lets Play" initiative).

Very interesting, cheers for that.
