They were members of the group Critical Mass, which advocates the use of bicycles and combat the use of cars on the streets of the capital.
Trampling happened after an argument with the driver some members of the group. At least 100 cyclists toured the street José do Patrocinio, in Lower Town neighborhood. Difficult to find much about it on the internet other than first hand accounts and lack of factual evidence of fatalities and so on.
Not for the faint of heart, the following videos show an overhead cell phone video (via a Brazilian news broadcast) and the aftermath on the street (from an eyewitness) of a maniac who sped through a Critical Mass bike ride in Porto Alegre, Brazil on Friday, February 25th. The driver apparently sped through the crowd, attempting to mow down as many of the cyclists as possible, before ditching the car.
According to the Brazilian news, there were 130 riders. Fifty were hit, and two are in serious condition. The driver ditched the black Volkswagen Golf and took the license plates, and police have no suspects.

Same thing happened in Santa Monica once. Old cantankerous geezer told he couldn't go down a street because of the weekly market, so he gassed it in his old 8cyl beast and killed several people including a baby. The bastard got off with some lame excuse about having a seizure or something, but he was known to be a dodgy temperamental person - and witnesses said he looked furious as he gunned the car through all the stalls and people

That is so unbelievable that for a few seconds I actually thought that this was one of those joke videos using special effects that you see on tube, it wasn't until the camera started focussing on all the injured cyclists that I realised that it really was a car driving through them
