Virgin media has announced the rumoured sports news channel. The channel, “Setanta Sports News” will carry news, editorial and action from a whole variety of sports and will be available free to customers with Digital TV. They also announced a sports-based portal site, which will carry highlights of every premiere league, coca cola championship, league 1 and 2 match, plus comment, editorial and news.

Setanta Sports is to launch a new Sports News channel exclusively on Cable. The channel will be free to Virgin Media’s 3 million digital TV subscribers.

The channel will offer a feast of breaking news, comment and analysis from the whole world of sport.

Setanta already has rights to an extensive portfolio of sports events, and will be using these to provide coverage of those events on Cable.

Also, Virgin Media is planning to launch a sports portal on the web. The site, due to launch Monday, will be free to everyone (not just Virgin Media customers), and will include highlights from all Barclays Premiere League , Coca Cola Championship, League 1 and League 2 matches. This includes every goal of every match, from all clubs. The highlights will be available for viewing for 1 week after first broadcast.

Central to the new site will be the fans themselves. The highlights mentioned above will be accompanied by an eclectic blend of views, comments, opinionated editorial and user generated content. The site will provide up to the minute reaction from the fans at all Premiere League games.

In addition, a series of programmes produced specifically for the site will follow the ups and downs of the Premiere League season, and a mobile TV studio will be at various matches to get reaction from the fans.

Ex-Southend footballer and comedian, Terry Alderton will present Video commentary, news and views on the portal.

The site will have high-profile columnists covering other sports, such as Kelly Dalglish, Eddie Irvine, Andrew Castle, Mike Catt and Alistair Cook covering sports from Motor sports through to Rugby.

The site will also offer editorial and exclusive content from all areas of the sporting world.

Commenting on the site, Malcolm Wall, Virgin Media CEO of content, said “With our free online highlights covering every Premiere League and Football League club in the UK, football fans will be able to keep up to date no matter which club they support. Sport is all about the fans, and the internet is the perfect medium for bringing the beautiful game to life. But no matter what the sport, fans will find our new portal the best place to get their daily dose of what’s going on on and off the pitch.”.
