We stayed in the Handlery in Union Square (it was part of a package so we didn't get much choice) but were happy with it, right in the city centre, although nothing is very far away in the city.

Stayed At the Holiday Inn at Fishermans Wharf, excellent, though I did have a room on the executive floor. Lots to see and do. I took the walk from Fishermans Wharf past the old airfield over the Golden Gate Bridge a d down to the next town of Sausalito, a few beers in the waterfront bars and back on the ferry. Also was a Real Ale Pub called The San Francisco Brewery Company at the end of Columbus, financial district end, good beer and good music. Somebody said it had ow closed so would be interested to know?

I stayed in a little wooden clapboard house on a hill. Very nice but I cannot recall the details as it was about 10 years ago. Lovely lovely city.

Go to the Argonaut which is next to Ghiradelhi Square and overlooking the cable car turnaround (turntable). Really nice, modern hotel, superbly situated.

Another vote for the Argonaut but do try for a deal as the rates can vary. Great location for bay views, Fishermans Wharf (a bit touristy but has to be done), right by the cable car etc. Can recommend having breakfast enjoying the view from the Buena Vista Cafe (opposite the hotel & cable car stop). Would also recommend hiring a bike (the shop is close to the hotel) and cycling over the Golden Gate bridge to Sausalito for lunch then take the ferry back to Fishermans Wharf which gives great views of the City, the bridge plus it passes close to Alactraz. SFO is a great city.

If you have a car then worth a drive up over the Golden Gate to Sonoma / Napa wine valleys (just over an hour), maybe to the giant redwoods or down the coast to Carmel & Monterey and the 17 mile scenic drive. If golf is your thing you can call in at Pebble Beach and wander through the Club house to check out the view of the 18th (and 19th!). Get a coffee on Cannery Row at Monterey and watch the Sea Otters just offshore, and check out the amazing Aquarium. Carmel is quaint small town America, get a picnic and check out the views from the beach.

If you have even more time then the scenery in Yosemite is stunning. Wouldn't recommend drinking and driving in California as they are very very strict. Otherwise have a fabulous visit!
