Run out??

In the spirit of the game? Both batsman assumed it was 4 runs but the ball did not hit the boundary. Both batsmen walked towards the pavilion for tea but Indians whipped bails off. Umpires deliberate and Bell given out. If one applies the letter of cricketing laws then the batsman is out but cast your mind back many years to The West Indies when Tony Greig removed the bails after the last ball of the day had been bowled and the batsmen were walking off the pitch. The batsman was given out then as the ball was not dead. Over night the decisions was reversed. Bad sportsmanship??

Fair play to India, was out by the letter of the law! Nice to see sportsmanship still exists!
Indeed. Is it still not one of the laws of cricket that a captain's decision can over-rule an umpire's decision?

Or, more strictly, a decision agreed by both captains can over-rule an umpire's decision?

What nobody has considered yet is was it a four.

I know it looked like he saved the four but they haven't shown him pick up the ball up to throw it in, where were his feet when he picked up the ball

A batsman can only be given out if a fielding player appeals. If no appeal is made then a batsman can not be dismissed under teh laws of the game.

The fielding captain has absolute discretion to withdraw the appeal which to his great credit Dhoni did after consideration.

Just showed a replay of collingwood appealing from a few years back after sidebottom wiped out the new Zealand batsman and the decision stood. Feel a little embarrassed for the England camp now
