After 50 years of sending letters from America, Alistair Cooke has died. As a child I used to enjoy his soothing voice on the radio (although never really understood what he was talking about). As I grew older I found his perspective on American life both enlightening and interesting, even if I didn't always agree with his political stance.

Agreed

Lovelly man and very good program

( If you get a chance listen to Dead Ringers 9 - there is an Alastair Cooke sketch which is very funny)

In my defence, I was left unsupervised.

...... and now we play you a recording of Alistair Cooke being attacked by a duck:

"I can never visit Philidelphia without ..... quack! quack! quack!"

Sorry, 2nd rate Monty Python sketch for those of you with long memories. RIP Mr Cooke, say hello to Peter Ustinov when you meet him at the Pearly Gates.

Mr Cook had a wonderful, spellbinding style.

His Letters started in the middle of something, went on to the end of something else and finished at the beginning of something quite different.

Totally confusing but somehow it always made sense.

He will be terribly missed.
