Morning chaps - I know it''s happening to a lot of people right now, but after 13 years of my working life, yesterday I was made redundant. Bit of a pisser in the current climate. Still, I won't miss the daily commute from Shoreham to London for a while, but at 46 I have never been out of work.

So, what to do with my time ?? I'll do the requisite writing of CV and applying for jobs etc. (if there are any out there), but maybe, just maybe I'll fancy doing something completely different. Making cheese ? writing a novel ? who knows.

Any NSC non-porn related suggestions ??

TD.

Sorry to hear that TD. You won't be the last and if you can afford to keep yourself going on your severance for a while you might come out of the other end the better for it.

Why not write a novel ABOUT cheese?

I lost my job in September, (I am 42) and signed up to do a counselling course part time which I really enjoyed. I found it quite difficult being at home and missed the social aspect you get from work. I had a cull and sold lots of stuff on ebay and amazon, I finally found a job in December on half my previous pay but I feel lucky to have got it. I wish you the best of luck and say stay positive and get down to the local college and enrole on a cheese making course or whatever floats your boat. I found NSC really useful as there were lots of helpful and friendly comments and it is always good to know that you are not alone in your predicament

Cheers, I hadn't thought about that. Made me smile though.

I've often thought about this. I think I'd consider learning how to cook and playing the guitar properly, or build a web site.

I also think it might be worth learning some proper tradesmen skills - like plumbing, carpentry or electrics. That way, you always have some sort of fall back for times like this which has got to give you a bit more confidence if nothing else.

I could be made redundant next week (they are getting rid of 11 out of 19 software developers) What is really pissing me off is that they are interviewing everyone to assess who they get rid of and we won't find out until Friday.

I'm at the start of my career but if I do go I'm seriously considering doing something completely different or having a go at a bit of freelance work. I guess the best way of seeing it is as an opportunity of sorts.

Interesting, I love cooking and have just had a fabulous new kitchen installed (great timing), but I would like to spend more time doing it. I really fancy making my own bread, which I have done occassionally before but now is a good time to start again. I like making my own pasta etc. too. I could go back to the guitar, I was in bands as a rock lead guitarist before work got in the way.

I need to look upon this as an opportunity to do stuff and make sure I don't sit in front of the TV all day. But not having that reason to get up each day is odd to say the least.

Hi TD - Really sorry to hear the news.

If it's any consolation, when it happened to me five years ago it turned out to be the best thing that happened to me. Okay, admittedly I got quite a handsome pay-off, but it made me take stock of where my career was going (nowhere), and gave me the kick up the arse I needed to do something about it.

Thanks Jon, yeah - it definitely could be a good thing in time, I don't think I would ever have left there of my own accord, too comfortable in it I guess.

BTW - My mobile was a work one, so that number is no good for me. I'll get a new mobile and drop you the number.

Tough break, do date I've been made redundant six times. Mind you at my age it's lucky I can still get work, I'm 54. Anyway, the main thing you need to do is keep occupied, don't get bored as that will make you depressed. If push comes to shove go for a walk, don't get stuck in the house.

Good luck.
