Question About Piers

Mendoza

NSC's Most Stalked
Yesterday I went to the Quadrant pub, and on the wall was a picture of a PIer in Brighton, with 2 more Piers in the background

So i learned for the 1st time that Brighton had 3 Piers, the 3rd called the Chain Pier

from the photo it was about where the concorde club is, i think

i just want to know about it, what was it for and when did it disappear?

Anyone with any knowledge of Brighton knows about the chain pier. Go to a bookstore or a library and pick up any book about the history of Brighton or old photos of Brighton. Probably plenty of stuff on t'internet if you look in Google.

I assumed (wrongly) that knowledge of the Chain Pier was automatically written into the DNA of every Brightonian at birth.

Some of the Chain Pier reappeared last summer during a particularly low tide.

The Chain Pier was opened in 1823 and was originally a landing platform. At that time, before the railways had taken off, Brighton was the quickest and most direct route to Londinium.

People started to take to the pier and it became extremely popular to walk on. It was the first example of large piles.

Originally the owners of the new West Pier had planned to buy the Chain Pier, knock it down and build their pier on the same site, but they did not get permission.

Alas, the Chain Pier was lost to storms in 1896.

There are many good websites about this...

www.piers.co.uk and so on...

Particularly interested in this topic, which I chose for my dissertation.

Ive got a peice of the Chain Pier at home.

It has been passed through the family for decades.

Not realy sure why anyone bothered to keep it,but its quite cool anyway.

If it is a bolt then your family may well be the reason it was washed away in that storm. Infidel!! :flameboun :flameboun

Indeed - I took photos of me walking around on the stumps, thereby fulfilling a long-held ambition to take a walk on the Chain Pier. Their reappearance was a quietly impressive and not uneerie moment - large bits of wood and iron screwed into the seabed by navvies in 1822.

You can still see the foundations for the railway line at low tide.

It does look quite the white knuckle ride ..

In my defence, I was left unsupervised.

Are there any pictures of that re-appearance?

Edit: Just read MoH's post. Colin, any chance you could post them?

Possibly, my limited techie skills permitting - but they're on my PC at home. I'll try to post from there tomorrow. Sorry.
