Brighton monitor Farren situation

October 20, 2008

Scouts from League One side Brighton were in attendance to watch Derry City striker Mark Farren during Friday’s victory over eircom League of Ireland champions Bohemians.

Farren notched the only goal at Dalymount Park, taking his tally for the season to 11 in the League and 18 in all competitions.

His winner on Friday was his fifth goal in four outings, and watching Brighton representatives will present a dossier to Seagulls manager Micky Adams ahead of a possible January transfer move.

Donegal man Farren, 27, burst on the scene with Derry five years ago, grabbing a relegation play-off hat-trick to keep the Candystripes in the top flight, and lifted the PFAI Player of the Year award in 2005.

Can't understand why we can't get a young premiership player on loan like most clubs instead of trolling around for near on non league players.???

How much tabacco/cigarettes and alcohol are you allowed to take back from Ireland??

This one looks like more of a permanent signing not a loan, so wouldnt be able to get until January

This article suggests we are selling Glenn Murray and looking for a permanent strike partner for Adam Virgo

I think it suggests more that we are looking to permanently recruit a 3rd out and out striker to slot in when Murray or Forster are injured/suspended/tired rather than resorting to makeshift forwards like Virgs and Anyinsah or someone of his ilk. If we sell Murray and bring in another unknown player from the Irish leagues we are truly f***ed!!!

Understandable cynicism. But then Kevin Doyle's not done too bad at Reading so there are some undiscovered gems about...

The rules these days about young players having to live within a certain distance of the academy they play for has been especially harsh on Ireland, closing the route into UK via the Merseyside and Manchester clubs that used to produce so much success. So maybe it's not a bad place to be looking.

So how come Chelsea have lots of foreign kids at theirs? And Arsenal don't seem too inconvenienced either. Don't they just bring the kids over and house them locally?

Farren is a turncoat bastard. He's done the Irish equivalent of say Virgo (or any other Brighton born and bred player) signing for Palace.

However he is one of the better strikers in the Eircom Premier (division that gave us Hawkins and O'Callaghan as well as McFaul and O'Cearuil for reference to the 'quality').

The season here ends in three weeks time and he may be a free agent as of then - its rare enough for even fully Pro players at the mid-ranking clubs here to get contracts that cover the winter!

No. Not allowed to do that - they have to move the parents as well, so it really needs to be a very special youngster indeed. Chelsea, for instance, picked up one lad from Copenhagen but had to give his dad a job to get round the rules.

I agree that loan signings are not great for the fluidity and stability of the squad. Hopefully he is the new Doyle. As already posted, lets hope it isn't dixon mk II.
