Lists pinched for NUFC and CPFC forums.

Personally I wouldn't mind us snapping up Nesta and Klose, just to add a bit of experience, like. :lolol:

Would LOVE to see us try and get Blackpool's David Vaughan. He'd get us out of the Championship alright!

Billy Jones at Preston would be good cover for Marcos Painter at left back, and he's quite a set piece taker. Was it 2 he scored in the 4-0 shocker at the Withdean a couple of years ago, for Crewe? He would be nifty. Failing that, let's snap up Reto Ziegler. Cracking left back.

I cannot believe he is only 25. HOW is that possible?!

I don't think he's aged since he first appeared at Tottenham! A bit like Andrea Pirlo. 31, REALLY?! Surely not.

Going back to that list, Piotr Trochowski. I was watching German football not long ago and this guy was smashing free-kicks toward goal with either foot, he cannoned one into the crossbar from 30 yards left footed and then whipped in a corner with his right foot. Sheer class. He'll go to a top club somewhere, though.

you've got the wrong Ziegler - you're thinking of Christian
Na, that's Ziege.

I think it's partly because when he was a regular at Spurs he was much younger than I thought he was (18, in fact), and I had him slightly muddled with Erik Edman, another LB who was at Spurs with Ziegler, and later played at Wigan (like Zielger). They both look slightly similar as well. But it's still very surprising!

Looking at that list there's very few that both would want to come here and I think would genuinely improve the squad/team.

Giles Barnes could just maybe be convinced to come and play here, and if he's anywhere near as good as he used to be would be an excellent addition. Could be a bit too similar to Bennett though (assuming he stays).
Anthony Gardner or Gareth McAuley could come in to play centre half alongside Greer.
Joe Murphy always used to be a highly rated young keeper, haven't followed him recently though. Maybe worth a punt?
Ferrie Bodie I assume will have much better offers but if he's still got injury problems is another who would improve us immensely if he came.

I think that the major problem Gus has alluded to is that ideally we would take a couple of long term loanees from a premiership side - young players eager to play, learn and develop. Unfortunately clubs won't release these players even though we will have made a bid, until the end of August once premiership squads are established. This means that we may well play our first four or five games with 9 out of 11 of our ideal starters. How we start the season with what will effectively be an under-strength squad may well define our season.

As a general rule, I'd rather Gus went after talented, hungry lower league players than overpaid players who are on their way down the league pyramid. That's what worries me about someone like David Vaughan.
