Performances At Copa America Will Determine Next Steps For Sarmiento

Jeremy Sarmiento spent the first half of last season on loan at West Brom in the Championship before heading back to Brighton and being sent on loan to Ipswich, where he was part of their promotion-winning squad. Now, attention has turned to what’s next for the winger, and the Copa America could help determine his next steps.

Sarmiento, 21, joined the Benfica youth set up from the Charlton academy system and wound up at Brighton in the summer of 2021. Since then, the aim has been to develop him with a view to him becoming a first-team player at the Amex. Following loan spells at West Brom and Ipswich, neither of which were especially productive, with only twelve starts registered from a possible forty, it’s now very much decision time.

Sarmiento is one of several Brighton players heading off on international duty this summer. Akin to teammates such as Bart Verbruggen and Pascal Gross, whose respective nations of the Netherlands and Germany, are both seen as having an outside chance of success according to betting online on the Euros 2024, Sarmiento’s Ecuador aren’t picked to be the winners, but it’s the player himself who could be.

You see, the wide left player may not have necessarily made the biggest impact out on loan last season, and he and Brighton will have more than likely expected more. However, especially at Ipswich, he did pop up with several important goals and a couple of assists, proving there is talent there and something to develop. Fans of the Tractor Boys are keen to see him return for their first Premier League campaign after a long absence, which is telling.

It’s also telling that after a year out of the international picture, he’s been called up for the Copa America, which will be the first tournament he’s been involved in since the last World Cup. What transpires between the start of the Copa America and the end of it could certainly impact what happens next in terms of Sarmiento’s future. He started Ecuador’s last two friendlies, and if he’s a starter in the upcoming competition, Brighton, Ipswich, and others will undoubtedly be watching on with interest.

As things stand, reports suggest the Tractor Boys have an option to extend Sarmiento’s loan deal at Portman Road for the upcoming season, thanks to their promotion to the top flight. And, you could see the appeal, especially for Sarmiento, as he’s much more likely to get minutes with Ipswich than he is at Brighton at present.

However, after not being a regular starter under Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna while on loan, would it be the right step to take? Would he get the game time required to aid his development? Or could his performances for Ecuador convince the Northern Irishman that he’s worthy of more starts in the Premier League? And, as you’d expect, good performances internationally this summer could also bring other suitors to the table who could offer precisely what both the player and Brighton want.
