Newcastle striker Michael Owen has targeted a return to first-team action in the game with Chelsea on 22 April following his lengthy lay-off with a cruciate ligament injury.

Great news hopefully by June 6th he will be 110%

Will be very suprised if he is half the player he once was, loss of pace will make him average, unfortunately. Also very injury prone for the last few seasons. I doubt he will be the saviour we would like him to be.

I have my doubts he will be the same player, but you never know. :)

Joe Cole is back soon, that is a real boost.

One-trick pony (pace) and he lost that a while ago.

Still better than most of England's alternatives though. :-(

Sadly that is correct.

Rooney should be dropped as well, but for who? Defore?! :glare:

Cruciate Ligament injury didn't do too much damage to a certain Horse headed striker....

I disagree that Owen's game is/was all about pace.

His first touch is what has got him most his goals for England.

That and his ability as a poacher. And what about those headers against the Argies not so long ago???

I agree. He lost the pace ages ago but has still performed. I think the issue now will be whether he can stay fit.

Anyone who is getting excited about the return of Owen is CLEARLY forgetting how shit England were during the World Cup (while he was still playing).

How many minutes did he actually play?

How many games had he played in the preceding months?

Probably the same people calling for Beckham to be recalled and have forgotten how shit he was in THREE tournaments.

Like I say, better than other options for England, but not the messiah - and clearly not the player he was in 1998.
