Name that player - cryptic version

Each Saturday in the Guardian Sports Section there is a guess the player based on a series of cryptic clues. So how about an Albion only version? If it takes off I will try and do one everyday - work permitting. No prizes beyond a headache. So here goes:

This tough tackling wing half from the Lowlands joined from the Cumbrian coast after beginning his career at a famous castle. He brought much needed stability following an historic event and provided some consistency during a rapid decline. He remainded around to help with the recovery before injury ended his career prematurely.

Good luck!

Nearly 80 views but nobody had a go at guessing the name. It's one for the old timers reallly - Jack Bertolini - 1958-1966. Born in Alloa (the Lowlands) and first played for Stirling Albion (famous castle) and joined the Albion from Workington (Cumbrian coast). The historic event was the Club's first ever promotion in 1958 (from old Division Three (South) to the then Division 2). The rapid decline was the back to back relegations from Division 2 to the new Division 4 but he found himself back in the Division 4 Championship winning team after the tragic death of Barrie Rees.
