BBC4 has a programme in its timeshift series on at the moment it is following Swindon Town by the cars I would say somewhere mid 60's.

Its a team made up of local lads between 17 - 20 or so, they are respectful and humble. They are expected to mix with the fans, and to return any greeting. They can drive a car so long as it is understated and not ostentatious. They are expected to live a life that is basic, frugal and polite.

They get a bonus of £1 for every 1000 people in the ground above 12,000 and they can earn as much as £65 in a good week.

Going into the reserves means they could lose as much as 30 or 40 sovs a week.

They do this despite their lives being under public scrutiny all the time.

Now tell me the players of today have it hard.

They are busy beating Orient at the moment.
