Sorry if this sounds like a silly question but forgive me, Im old. :dunce:

Whats the difference between an MP3 & Ipod?
Do they do the same thing?

My little un wants an ipod for xmas.
Is there anything I should look out for or are they all much of a muchness?

Do I need any leads to download from the PC? or do they come with the unit? Or is that not how you do it?

I guess the bigger the memory, the more tunes it stores???

Any tips or advise would be welcome... Thanks
:dunce:

Mp3's and ipods are basically the same.

Probably should avoid the ipod nano as they had alot of problems when first brought out but they may have been corrected

The leads will come included aswell as an installation disk

And yea more memory more songs

mp3 is a compression format. An 'mp3' player will always play mp3's, and often play Windows Media Audio as well. They sometimes support rarer formats like AAC and FLAC.

An iPod is an mp3 player that supports AAC. And has a ~35% price markup for the brandname. Contrary to what it seems, they didn't think of the product, Apple were extremely late to market.

If you want an ipod best bet is order online from Apple as the price will be pretty much the same and they will engrave it for free at Apple.

It's widely known that the sound quality of the Creative Zen Micro pisses all over the i-pod. They also have a range of accesssories available and haven't been plagued with problems of dodgy screens, batteries etc like i-pods have.

Ive had one for two months now and its been brilliant, the girlfriend even got it so wet last week it crashed and locked up, 3 hours on the rad and a reset and it was fine, even the water under the screen :dunce: has now gone.

Is there any proof of this or is it just Apple hating ?

No, theres proof in the form of double blind sound tests done by a third party. Its not helped by two factors, mind:

1. The headphones Apple give you with an iPod are atrociously poor. Replace them and the quality is far, far higher
2. The mp3 encoder in iTunes is crap, and music from the iTunes Music Store is heavily, heavily compressed.
If you use a decent audio source the quality is improved again

However, its still beaten by Creative and iRiver.

true about the headphones I use Seinheiser HD25's and have ripped at 192 using freerip which is pretty good, I don't get on with iTunes, I must admit its all a bit poncy :)

Apple are the only ones out there with the marketinh muscle, hype and subsequent ability to just attract the style conscious.

Bottom line is that there are plenty of alternatives that compete at quality and price level.

Having said that the IPod Nano is a pretty good effort as it breaches the gap between very portable but limited capacity flash memory based MP3 players and hefty pieces of kit like the regular IPod and its piss poor battery life and reliability issues (hard disc problems mainly).

As previously stated though the IPod Nano is very fragile and is easily scratched so a protective skin is a must.

Personally i've got a 1GB Flash Based I-River that suits me fine as i use it for the gym mainly and i don't need to carry round my entire CD collection
