More drivel from Sven

"If Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham get to the tournament fit and on their best form, there's no question England have the most powerful midfield. For our World Cup chances, it's crucial these three are in the best shape possible."

Nailed on proof then that Sven will indeed once again deploy the midfield formation of Beckham/Gerrard/Lampard/Cole that has failed the acid test at every tournament, every time. Looks like the holding midfielder we so deseprately need in the team will again be sacrificed because he won't hear of dropping any of his midfield megastars. YES Sven, we KNOW they are all fine players, but has the penny not yet dropped that they don't actually play particularly well together ? Guess not. Oh well.

"If you think about Brazil carefully, then you realise they have only won the World Cup in Europe once, in 1958. Whenever Brazil have lifted the trophy, it has been on a different part of the football planet. England have to realise this shows Brazil's life becomes difficult when they have to play in Europe, and the same will happen in Germany".

"A different part of the football planet..." Eh ? Are we really now relying on history and geography lessons to undermine Brazils chances ? Yes, the record books show they have only won it once in Europe, but the fact that most if not all of their superstars now play over here doesn't seem to enter into Svens equation. Can't WAIT for the pre-match and half time teamtalk if we have to play that lot.
"Vell, errrr, Brazil only vin on a different part of the, errrr, football planet so, errrr....go out there and, errr.......Tord. You tell zem".

"People think that Brazil are unbeatable, but they are not - their defence is nowhere near as strong as their attack"

A fairly tired old football cliche. They've got the most potent attack in world football, but their defence can hardly be dismissed as mugs - you don't get to three consecutive World Cup Finals if you can't defend against the best in the world. And England failed miserably to break them down even when they'd been reduced to ten men, so its a bit rich for Sven to start calling the Brazilian defence into question.

Can't he just go NOW ?

Originally uttered by Sven Goran Eriksson
"Maybe in some games I would pick Carrick ahead of Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard in order to have a real sitting midfielder," revealed Eriksson.

"In some games we will meet a team with two strikers and a player like Zinedine Zidane behind them and you have to think about what to do."

Believe it when I see it. If Lampard/Gerrard are available, they both play. End of story. And to reaffirm, how about this little pearler later on in the same article:

"Gerrard and Lampard are two extremely intelligent football players who, in the future when they lose a little bit of energy, could play extremely well as sitting midfielders. I'm sure about that."
So even when Gerrard/Lampard are knackered, they're STILL preferable to a specialist holding midfielder according to Sven. Thank christ for Carrick and Parkers sake this bloke is f***ing off in July.

Outstanding. Not one single mistake, if memory serves.

You're becoming a zealot on this one Easy. I can tell World Cup fever is starting to take a hold.

Just a couple of points:

Brazil have reached two of the three previous finals on different parts of the football planet so that doesn't count.

Gerrard didn't play in the last World Cup, so you can't blame him for our failure there.

You'll be blaming Rio for EURO2004 next....

EDIT. Damn I'm slow.

FRUIT OF THE BLOOM
i still say Gerrard and Lampard can play centrally together, its Beckham getting in there way that fucks it all up.
If we are to employ a holding midfielder though id rather have Gerrard or SWP on the right than Beckham.

I still say we have a great chance regardless of who he plays though.

I can't believe i actually mentioned possibly dropping Lampard...if he has to drop a player for Carrick or another holding midfielder it must be Gerrard.

Even Beckham's performances are better than that of Gerrard over recent times
