So there was no atmosphere at football matches prior to the introduction of segregation (early 80s I think)?

Back in the early 90s, I went to Maine Road to see Man City v West Brom and found that there was a neutrals area. It was quite fun.

I doubt there are many grounds that attract many neutrals to make it worthwhile, though, and as others have said, the fun of away games is being able to poke fun at the home supporters from a safe distance.
