McGhee Blames Lewes District Council For Rooney's Injury

Wayne Rooney is a doubt for the World Cup after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his right foot during Manchester United's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea. The 20-year-old striker has been told he may be out for six weeks, exactly the amount of time until England's first game against Paraguay on 10 June. He was carried off after an innocuous decision by Lewes District Council to challenge the Falmer Stadium, the proposed community stadium for League One outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.

England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson will name his provisional World Cup squad on 8 May and his definitive one by 15 May.
Under Fifa rules, coaches can replace players injured after the 15 May deadline, but not those hurt before. The England coach said in March: "If Rooney has a small problem, would you still take him? What alternative do you have? If you have a centre-half who might not be ready you can take another one but can you find another Rooney?"

Brighton manager Mark McGhee said "Obviously it's a blow, as there is a left back problem with Ashley Cole not fully fit, and it's understandable to be pessimistic, but I reckon he can play a part in the World Cup, but if Lewes were to have stayed out of the decision, Rooney would be fit and England may have had a great chance of World Cup Glory"

Mchee who has been left in limbo next season because of Lewes District Council taking legal action against the government, Brighton & Hove City Council and the club over the plans explained " You cannot put any blame on the challenge by Richardho Carvallho, or on Nike for their brand new lightweight boot, that Rooney was wearing for the first time. It is obvious where the blame lies, and that is with the Council of Lewes District"

Norman Baker, a Lib Dem MP for the Lewes Constituency, has previously said he would gamble on Rooney's fitness by challenging the Yes vote by John Prescott in October 2005 - even if there was only a small chance of him being fit for the tournament.

Manchester United issued a statement on their website regarding the injury on Saturday evening. It read: "Wayne Rooney has a fracture of the base of the fourth metatarsal on his right foot. He will be out for six weeks, this coincides with Anne De Vecchi's return from her holiday in Benidorm, when a larger scale campaign against the stadium will begin"

John Prescott took time out from his busy womanising schedule to share his points of views, "Rooney can forget about playing in England's first two matches at the World Cup. I'd doubt very much if he makes the first game or even the second game. He probably wont make the Paraguay match or the game against Trinidad and Tobago either" Prescott told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Like my longest diet, I would say seven weeks. From five weeks onwards just build up the exercise and see how it goes.

Mcghee said, "Obviously England will have machines in Germany to monitor it, to see if there is any damage being caused through exercise. But the World Cup is irrelevant as the season ended on Easter Monday"

Brighton and Hove Albion was granted permission for the 23,000-seater stadium after a seven year battle. In a brief statement, before her 6 week holiday Lewes District Councillor, Ann De Vecchi said "Rooney's involvement was of direct detrimental effect to the Falmer Village duck pond, as treatment would involve draining it of all its water, then bulldozing down the picturesque surrounding cottages. The World Cup is not of national importance so it left us with no alternative but to challenge the stadium decision,"

The youngster is seen as an integral part of England's bid to win the World Cup in Germany. He broke a bone in the same foot during England's quarter-final defeat by Portugal in Euro 2004. His absence was seen as a major factor in England's failure to progress to the semi-finals.

Rooney's position is remarkably similar to that of England captain David Beckham before the last World Cup in 2002. Then, Beckham broke his fifth metatarsal nearly eight weeks before the start of England's World Cup campaign. And while he played from the start of the tournament, he was clearly not fit - a fact he later admitted.

Perhaps you'll be disapointed is Mcghee gets the sack as you won't have the chance to come with these!
